Description:
London : Houlston & Wright, [1859]. First edition. Vivid sketches of London life, hour by hour - Billingsgate Market at 4 a.m., printing The Times at 5, Covent Garden Market at 6, and so on through the day - commuters, in court, a fashionable marriage, the London Docks, auctions, clubs, a theatrical green room, etc., until a late debate in the House of Commons, a Bal Masque, and Bow Street police station in the early hours of the morning round off the day. "London scenes of every kind, and London people of every grade, he knows thoroughly; indeed, more remarkable even than the microscopic accuracy of his descriptions is the universality of the knowledge which enables him to describe ... he has thoroughly dissected London life, and taken up and laid bare the minutest artery" (Illustrated Times, 29th October 1859). Demy 8vo (22cm). xii,(5)-392pp. Portrait frontispiece and forty-seven wood-engravings of London scenes crowded with life by William McConnell (1833-1867). Original orange-brown cloth,… Read More

London : Hodder & Stoughton, [1929]. An early reprint of the original 1928 edition. Bulldog Drummond has rid the world of Carl Peterson, but Irma lives on - Mrs Drummond is abducted, "hair-raising adventures in haunted houses, deserted mills, at Stonehenge at midnight, and in Irma's fantastic room. The probabilities of the tale may be far-fetched, but that will not prevent its being hailed as worthy successor to the stories of the series that have preceded it" (The Scotsman, 16th August 1928). Crown 8vo (20cm). 312,4pp. Original mustard-yellow cloth, lettered in black; a few minor marks and slight creases; mild spotting of edges; outer leaves lightly tanned, but overall a very good copy. Description:
London : Hodder & Stoughton, [1930]. First edition. "Tiny Carteret stretched out a hand like a leg of mutton and picked up the marmalade. On the sideboard what remained of the kidneys and bacon still sizzled cheerfully on the hot plate; by his side a cup of dimensions suitable for a baby's bath gave forth the fragrant smell of coffee. In short, Tiny Carteret, half-way through his breakfast ...". Rugby-playing hero ventures forth - sinister organisation based in Switzerland, compromising photographic negative, the honour of a Balkan queen, the happiness of an English duke's daughter, the security of the state, London night-clubs, Parisian hotels, murder and mayhem - "a story of thrilling adventure and ingenuity the like of which has seldom been written" (Western Mail, 14th August 1930). Crown 8vo (20cm). 320pp. Original blue cloth, ruled in black and blind, and lettered in black; a few edge spots, but a very good sharp and sound copy. Description:
London : Faber & Faber, (1939). First British edition. Six sequences of Saroyan short stories - "Mr. Saroyan is so diverse, so expressive, that he is never a bore and always amusing ... Seldom cynical, occasionally angry, he is always seeing, watching, understanding, and transposing, into his highly artificial prose that achieves the ultra-natural, the ways, foibles, desires and idiocies of mankind ... he has a spate of words at need and sometimes lets them tumble over one another, but always as trained acrobats, never with casual effect or effort" (Birmingham Daily Post, 21st March 1939). Crown 8vo (20cm). 316,[iv]pp. Original black cloth, blocked and lettered in yellow; a few faint spots to endpapers, but an exceptionally good copy of a book where the yellow blocking has usually suffered - in the striking original dust-jacket - the jacket with minimal wear and a sprinkle of spots, but also exceptionally good.

Description:
London : Modern Fiction, [1948]. First edition. "These 'spivs', as they are named, have no identity cards, no ration books, no clothing or other coupons of legal acquisition. They are, in a civic sense, outlaws". Post-war London memorably evoked as swell-looking "Yorkshire Alice", popular with thieves and con-men, is knifed to death in a Soho alley. Correspondence from 1947 between Fawcett and his publisher, Edwin Turvey, reveals that the original manuscript was mislaid for a time, but that Fawcett was paid £33 for this "very good Sarto indeed" and Perl probably £5 for the cover. Crown 8vo (19cm). 128pp. Original pictorial stapled wrappers - a redhead in blue by H. W. Perl; slightly chipped and somewhat creased, with a few short nicks and tears; failed tape repair to front wrapper; text lightly tanned, but a reasonable copy of an uncommon title. London : Modern Fiction, [ca.1943]. First edition : the variant with the plain lower wrapper. The United Ladies' Club of Chicago - Dynamite Doll, Slappy Sal (not to mention her husband Jelly the Fish), Velvet Vi, Reno Doreena - but Anna Toplitski craves the "sharp, puncturing kiss" of the hypodermic syringe. It has become apparent from the details of the May 1949 "passing off" High Court hearing before Mr Justice Romer, in which Fawcett and his publisher, Edwin Turvey, sued each other over the rights in the "Ben Sarto" name, that many of the Sarto titles were first published considerably earlier than has previously been supposed. Evidence produced at the trial over the surrender of rights in reprints suggests that the present title must have been in print prior at some time prior to the summer of 1944. Crown 8vo (19cm). 128pp. Original pictorial stapled wrappers - a typical H. W.
