Description:
Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1979. First Edition. Galley's for Salter's fifth novel, which originated as a screenplay he wrote for Robert Redford in 1976. The mountain climbing piece, based on the exploits of maverick American climber Gary Hemming, was one Salter spent over a year researching. "He took up climbing, scaling rock walls, bivouacking on ledges, in the Rockies and the Alps, with Royal Robbins and others. When he turned in the script to Redford, he felt it was his best. "I'll be crushingly disapponted if it's not cherished," he wrote in a letter to a friend. But Redford thought that the hero was too taciturn for the screen. A friend, Robert Ginna, then the editor-in-chief at Little, Brown, suggested that Salter turn it into a novel, which Ginna published, in 1979. Solo Faces met with modest success, and is highly regarded by alpinists for its authentic depiction of climbing" (Paumgarten, Nick. "The Last Book." The New Yorker, April 15, 2013). Santa Rosa: Black Sparrow Press, 1993. First Edition. A substantial collection of poems by this venerable counterculture figure and musician, many of which first appeared in the pages of Notus, Long Shot, Sulfur, The World, Heartland, and San Francisco Magazine, et al. A significant copy from the collection of Israel Goodman Young (1928-2019), long-time proprietor of the Folklore Center in Greenwich Village, once a major nexus for literature and the arts. Young's relationship with Sanders spanned five decades on two continents. Sanders writes fondly of him in his memoir Fug You: "Israel Young, who ran the Folklore Center, a cultural center frequented by many folksingers and musicians, became a friend. I used his mimeograph to print an issue of Fuck You. I knew him as a great supporter of the avant-garde..." (p.106). Indeed, Sanders would read his poetry at the Folklore Center, and the first Fugs concert was held at their new location, on Sixth Avenue and West Third Street in 1965. Young's interaction… Read more

Description:
Greenwich: Gold Medal, 1961. First Edition. New. First Printing. A Near Fine copy of Willeford's pseudonymous novel, a dark S&M affair. The spine is faintly slanted with a few glue ridges running down the center, and the yellow edgestaining is a touch uneven at the side of the textblock. Appears unread, and the kinky Bob Abbett cover does tend to leave a lasting impression. This is a Review Copy, with the original Gold Medal slip laid in. Published under the sole by-line of W. Franklin Sanders. In his files, Willeford had a manuscript of this novel called "Deliver Me From Dallas!" by "W. Franklin Sanders and Charles Willeford." Willeford's name is never mentioned on the Review Slip, though the publisher's description of Sanders sounds a whole lot like him. One of the less common Willeford paperback originals, especially so as a Review Copy.
