Bound in white cloth with striking black lettering and jagged design stamped in black on the front board, black lettering on spine. Light age-toning to cloth, and with a discreet private library label on the rear pastedown (Martinsen, at 5 E. Canon Perdido, Santa Barbara). The dust jacket is quite fresh for its age, showing only the slightest evidence of its age - no edge-wear and with the $2.50 price intact on the front flap. The novel begins just after Easter, following the first revolution. In a brief New York Times review (1931), the novel is said to contain some Turgenev and Chekhov, enhanced by the author's personal experiences. A notably bright copy with the Ermakoff-designed dust jacket featuring an abstract art-deco image using bold geometric patterns. Dust jacket is now protected in a removable, clear archival sleeve.

Published annually from 1954 to 1971 with substantial articles and iconography on Japanese arts and culture, supported by industrial advertisers. Indeed, the ads speak volumes about mid-20th-century Japan, offering a bewildering array of design elements and innovations. A splendid production.

The true first English language edition, predating the Houghton, Mifflin edition published later the same year. The stature of Sukarai's narrative? A fixture in the canon of modern warfare literature. His accounts of sieges following interminable preparations, of infantry being mowed down as if by massive scythe, of futility and boredom being displaced by surges of adrenalin - all are a harbinger of the celebrated WWI narratives that followed. Indeed, Sukarai's accounts are eerily similar to those documenting the Western Front and the Somme described by Sassoon, Graves, Dunn, et al. Scarce.
