Description:
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1931. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Very Good+/Near Fine. Ermakoff. 8vo. Pp. 434. Bound in white cloth with striking black lettering and jagged design stamped in black on the front board, black lettering on spine. Light age-toning to cloth, and with a discreet private library label on the rear pastedown (Martinsen, at 5 E. Canon Perdido, Santa Barbara). The dust jacket is quite fresh for its age, showing only the slightest evidence of its age - no edge-wear and with the $2.50 price intact on the front flap. The novel begins just after Easter, following the first revolution. In a brief New York Times review (1931), the novel is said to contain some Turgenev and Chekhov, enhanced by the author's personal experiences. A notably bright copy with the Ermakoff-designed dust jacket featuring an abstract art-deco image using bold geometric patterns. Dust jacket is now protected in a removable, clear archival sleeve.

London: Constable, 1947. First Edition. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Very Good+/Very Good+. John Piper (dust jacket and frontispiece). Small 8vo. Pp. xi, [2], 3-501. With a postscript by the author. Bound in plum cloth with author's monogram in gilt on front board; title block in gilt on spine. Spine just a touch sunned; bookseller tag on front pastedown (Collets, Hempstead). In the illustrated dust jacket, spine darkened but price remains intact on front panel. A follow-up, of sorts, to the author's Fanny by Gaslight, inasmuch as the Victorian underworld is depicted with accurate verisimilitude. Sadleir's historical view was informed by his scholarship of Victorian literature, and pursuits in Victorian bibliography. He and his father were also keen art collectors, and are credited with introducing Kandinsky, and especially his theories of abstract art, to the West. As such, and as a publisher at Constable, Sadleir's choice of John Piper as dust jacket and frontispiece illustrator (image is…

Said's groundbreaking polemic lambasting the ossified Western view of the East as sensual, lazy, tyrannical, corrupt and retrograde. Among his fresh insights was that Forster, Conrad and Kipling produced novels designed not to question status quo, but to bolster colonialism, to keep the empire intact. The dust jacket features the painting "The Snake Charmer" by Jean-Leon Gerome. While the condition factors are evident, this copy presents well, with the dust jacket now housed in a…

Description:
Tokyo: Teibi Publishing, 1907. First Edition in English. Hardcover. Very Good-. 8vo. Pp. iv, ii, 250, [4]. Frontis. illustration with tissue guard. Quarter ivory cloth over gray boards, gilt lettering and red chop on front board. Light soiling and wear, with a vertical scuff on the front board; front hinge starting. Bookplate on front pastedown. The true first English language edition, predating the Houghton, Mifflin edition published later the same year. The stature of Sukarai's narrative? A fixture in the canon of modern warfare literature. His accounts of sieges following interminable preparations, of infantry being mowed down as if by massive scythe, of futility and boredom being displaced by surges of adrenalin - all are a harbinger of the celebrated WWI narratives that followed. Indeed, Sukarai's accounts are eerily similar to those documenting the Western Front and the Somme described by Sassoon, Graves, Dunn, et al. Scarce. Now protected with a removable, clear archival jacket.

Dedicated to both his agent, Dorothy Olding, and his editor at the New Yorker, Gus Lobrano, Salinger's second book is presented here in the first Modern Library edition.Following this collection, Salinger's output was tantamount to logorrhea, unchecked by his editor, William Shawn, following the death of Gus Lobrano, the uncredited New Yorker editor who created Salinger.
