With 12 plates including 2 portraits of Rabelais and 10 scenes after the drawings of Devéria. Included also is the fold-out "carte du Chinonois" which, according to Brunet is not found in all copies. Volume IX ("les songes drolatiques") contains an additional title page, a facsimile of the 1565 title, and 120 full page woodcut grotesques, reproduced by Thompson after those in the original edition [Brunet]. This edition includes commentaries and notes by Jacob Le Duchat, Charles Esmangart, Éloi Johanneau, Volataire etc. Bound in period cat’s-paw calf boards with gilt double fillet borders, and board edge decoration; expertly re-backed with the spine displaying gilt raised bands, gilt labels and panels stamped in blind. Volume I. pp. viii, 628, with frontispiece of the author. Volume II. pp. 205, [1]. Bound in period quarter leather with marbled boards. Re-backed; the original spine is preserved although it is darkened and well worn. Inner hinges neatly strengthened. Interior pages contain mild scattered foxing and minor wear. Peder Rhode (1734-1793) was a Danish pastor and historian. His "Samlinger til de danske Øers Laalands og Falsters Historie" (first published in two volumes 1776-94) contains interesting details on the customs, life-style, superstition and folklore of the Danish islands Lolland and Falster. The 1859 edition includes many changes, additions and corrections.

Lacking final blank leaf. 20 Woodcut illustrations depicting imagery from the "Apocalypse of John" accompany the text. Occasional woodcut decorative initials are also present. The title displays Ambroise Girault’s woodcut printer’s device. A clipped area (1.7 x 6 cm) in the upper outer margin of the title page is carefully restored using matching period paper (difficult to notice at first glance). The title is also marked with the addition of red hand-ruled panel lines, well executed, (perhaps done at an early date) imitating a style sometimes seen in 17th century English Bibles and prayer books.
