Asuncion, "La Tarde", 1904. 12mo (16.7 x 11.8 cm). 50 pp. Original printed wrappers. = Very rare translation into Spanish of a paper on boundary disputes between Paraguay and Bolivia, first published in a German journal on South America, the Sudamerikanische Rundschau No. 1 of volume XII, published in Berlin in April 1904. Written by Richard Friedrich Eberhard von Fischer-Treuenfeld (1835-1907), a civil engineer and Consul General in Paraguay for the Kingdom of Saxony. A very good copy.

Original uniform half cloth over grained boards. Spines with gilt line and titles. = Important catalogue of the algae of Europe. the lithographed portrait is of the German botanist, and mycologist Gottlob Ludwig Rabenhorst (1806-1881) himself, with his facsimile autograph. Boards a bit rubbed, bookplate on the front paste-downs, library marks on spine foot, cancelled stamps on the volume's title pages, however not on the work's title pages. Printed soft cover. = With a biography and portrait of arguably the most famous brachiopodologist, the Scottish palaeontologist Thomas Davidson (1817-1885), and 55 papers on aspects like paleobiogeography, systematics and evolution, and brachiopod ecology. Published as "Collection 'Biostratigraphie du Paléozoïque 4". A very good, clean copy.

London, Ackermann, 1837. Four hand-coloured aquatint plates. Broadsheets, oblong (42 x 64 cm), in uniform frames with gilt borders. Each frame size 62.5 x 82.0 cm. = Four rare images after the paintings by James Pollard (1792-1867) commemorating this great race. With the following captions: "Anticipation. Who is the winner?"; "Approbation. Off in good shape"; "Vexation - The false start"; "Joy and desperation! - All over but settling". Single plates are rather rare, complete sets are very rare. Some light spotting, small chip to one frame corner, otherwise very good. The frames are from a renowned Dutch firm, Heijdenrijk, in The Hague and Amsterdam, founded in 1845 and still active.

The plates show crystals formed in cells. The author is the German botanist Ludwig Adolph Timotheus Radlkofer (1829-1927). "Radlkofer became a physician in 1854 and earned a PhD in botany at Jena the following year. He became an associate professor of botany at the University of Munich in 1859 as well as deputy director of the botanical garden and herbarium. In 1892 he was named director of the Botanical Museum. Later stiff, green wrappers. = A detailed description of the geology of a part of the western, French Alps, with fine photos of several mountains, and a very large, folded map. Inscribed and signed by the author, the French geologist Eugène Paul Antoine Jacques Raguin (1900-2001 - i.e., perhaps the only geologist who lived in three centuries!) to the Austrian geologist Leopold Kober (1883-1970). A very good, clean copy.

Original green cloth with white embossed title on the spine and front board. Marbled endpapers. Speckled edges. = A seldom seen, well-illustrated work by the mining engineer and director of the Société des mines de Balia-Karaïdin (near Istanbul), Georges Ralli, on the Carboniferous of Turkey, with a rich and fairly well-preserved flora. This is a much expanded, updated and much better illustrated edition of a work first published in 1896. Some light, marginal staining to the rear board, otherwise an excellewnt, clean and unmarked copy.

Gilt title on the spines. = This is largely a collection of works by the chief editor, the Nobel Prize laureate and one of India's greatest mathematicians and physicists, Sir Chandrasekhara Vekata Raman (1888-1970). "In 1902, Raman joined [the] Presidency College in Madras where his father was a lecturer in mathematics and physics. In 1904 he passed his Bachelor of Arts examination of University of Madras. He stood first and won the gold medal in physics. In 1907 he gained his Master of Sciences degree with the highest distinctions from University of Madras. Original printed linen softcover. = A detailed monograph, including species descriptions, synonymy, chemistry, distribution, and various other notes. This is volume 34 of Bibliotheca Lichenologica. This copy, however, is also Gerhard Rambold's thesis: A separate, printed title is mounted on the first blank recto; a printed curriculum vitae is mounted on the last leaf's blank verso, and a label stating the date on which the author defended his thesis is mounted on the first blank verso. A very good, clean copy.

Speckled edges. = Nicely illustrated work on small fresh water crustaceans, in particular Cladocera and Ostracoda, but some other small Copepoda and hydracarii. The author, Karl August Ramdohr (?-after 1833) was a German zoologist, entomologist, Crustacea specialist and microscopist. The drawings are quite detailed. A very good clean copy. Very rare. Floral endpapers. Speckled edges. = Seminal paper by the physicist Carl Wilhelm Ramsauer (1879-1955) in which he described the discovery of what was to be named the Ramsauer-Townsend effect. "He pioneered the field of electron and proton collisions with gas molecules (Wikipedia). Ramsauer studied the absorption in gases of electrons with steadily decreasing velocity. On this occasion Ramsauer coined the term - and the associated concept - 'effective cross section' (Wirkungsquerschnitt), which became one of the most common technical terms in atomic and nuclear physics" (DSB). Printed boards with blind linen spine. = Written by John Ramsay of Kildalton, president of the Chamber of Commerce of Glasgow on the occasion of the opening of the Suez Canal on 11 January 1870. The author, the British mycologist John Ramsbottom (1885-1974) gives a detailed, annotated review of the modern history, since Linnaeus, of the study and knowledge of Fungi. "From 1929 to 1950, he was Keeper of Botany at the British Museum. He served as general secretary and twice as president of the British Mycological Society, and was long editor of its Transactions. He was president of the Quekett Microscopical Club from 1928 to 1931 and was elected an Honorary Member in 1937.
