Description:
Manchester, 1865. Radford, Thomas (1793-1881). Observations on the caesarean section and on other obstetric operations. With an appendix of cases. [4], 68, xlviii pp. 6 plates, 2 folding tables (pp. 65-68). Manchester: N.p., 1865. 216 x 137 mm. Original cloth over limp boards, stamped in gilt and blind, skillfully rebacked, light edgewear. Lower corner of title-leaf chipped, occasional foxing but very good. Presentation Copy, inscribed on the title: "For the Library of the Sheffield General Infirmary Presented by the Author." First Edition. Radford, an obstetrician associated with St. Mary's Hospital in Manchester, wrote the present work to promote the use of cesarean section—at that time a highly risky operation with an extremely high mortality rate—in cases where the woman's pelvis was too narrow or deformed for vaginal delivery. Radford's arguments were based on moral as well as medical grounds: He abhorred the then-standard practice of craniotomy (puncturing or crushing the fetal head) to…

Paris: Didot, 1818. The Founder of French Ecological Thought Rauch, Francois Antoine (c. 1777-1837). Regeneration de la nature vegetale. . . . 2 vols. 8vo. xxxi, [5], 502; 398pp. Paris: Didot, 1818. 198 x 124 mm. Quarter sheep, gilt, c. 1818, a little rubbed. Slight dampstaining & foxing affecting a few leaves at front & back, but otherwise fine. Second & Best Edition, revised and expanded from the 1802 original, which had the title Harmonie hydro-vegetale et meteorologique. A civil engineer, Rauch's concern for the environment stemmed from his worries about deforestation, which not only affected the agriculture and 'scenery' of the countryside, but also the whole ecological balance of crops, flora and fauna, and human interaction with the ecological system. In a wide-ranging discussion, Harmonie Hydro-Végétale discussed the interrelationships between climate, terrain and vegetation, and suggested ways to establish a state of 'harmony' between the environment and man. He included topics such as…

1890. Raulin, Jules (1836-96). Champ d'expériences. Manuscript notebook. [130]pp., with diagrams and charts. N.p., 1890-93. 214 x 172 mm. Original embossed boards, cloth backstrip, some wear at spine and edges, a few leaves loose. Minor fraying at edges but very good. Scientific notebook written by plant physiologist Jules Raulin, who studied under Pasteur at the École Normale Supérieur and served as Pasteur's first laboratory assistant at the school. Raulin collaborated with Pasteur on the latter's investigations of fermentation, oxidation and silkworm disease; he also pursued his own research on the chemical role of minerals in plant nutrition, which led to important advances in agriculture. In 1876 Raulin was appointed professor of chemistry at the Faculté des Sciences in Lyon, and in 1883 he founded the École de Chimie Industrielle (School of Industrial Chemistry), where he spent most of his research time on agronomy and silk production. He was the first to identify the role of zinc in plant…

Paris: Didot le Jeune, 1768. Ravaton, Hugues. Chirurgie d'armee, ou traite des plaies d'armes a feu, et d'armes blanches. 8vo. viii, 681 [i.e., 685] [1]pp. 7 engraved plates. Paris: P. Fr. Didot le jeune, 1768. 197 x 123 mm. Mottled sheep c. 1768, a little rubbed, skillfully rebacked and recornered. Light foxing and browning, former owner's name on title crossed out. Booklabel (or bookseller's label?) of Gabriel Mullet on title. First Edition. Garrison-Morton 2154: "One of the most important works on military surgery during the 18th century." Ravaton wrote intelligently about the treatment of gunshot wounds, and was the first to adopt the double-flap method in amputation; he also introduced the method of suspending fractures in a hanging position by means of a tin boot hung from a wire and attached to a frame (this device is illustrated in plate IV). OCLC states that the author's Traite des plaies d'armes a feu (1750) represents an earlier version of the Chirurgie d'armee, a statement borne out by…

First Edition of the first book on the detection of forged documents, with the imprint dated 1666 and privilege dated 8 April 1666. The Bibliothèque nationale de France has a unique copy of Raveneau's work with title-page dated 1665. According to Anne Sauvy, Livres saisis à Paris entre 1678 and 1701 (1972) No. 19, the 1665 edition bears a privilege dated July 1665. In that copy is a note indicating that this privilege was obtained improperly. Presumably Raveneau had to delay publication until he obtained an accepted privilege; the privilege in the 1666…

Frankfurt: B. Dondorf, 1854. Ravenstein, Friedrich August (1809-81). Plastischer Schul-Atlas für die erste Stufe des Unterrichts in der Erdkunde. Set of 8 colored relief maps printed on light pasteboard, in the original cardboard drop-side box (expertly repaired) with polychrome paper label, preserved in a cloth drop-side box with acetate window in the lid. Frankfurt am Main: B. Dondorf, 1854. 235 x 282 mm. (maps); 245 x 295 mm. (box). Raised areas of maps a bit worn, box label a bit soiled and rubbed, but a very good set of this fragile atlas. Third edition, complete with the rare original box featuring a highly decorative polychrome label on the lid, with inner label serving as the set's "title-page" and key to the maps. Ravenstein, an innovative German cartographer, was the first to produce and publish commercially viable relief maps, issuing the first edition of his "Plastic" (i.e., relief) atlas in 1838. The atlas, intended as a teaching tool, was a considerable success, going through several…
