Description:
Doubleday, Doran & Company, Garden City, NY, 1930. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Good Condition. Book A stated first edition of Roberts' first novel. The long, 18th century-style title only appeared in the first (actually printed in 1929) and second (January 1930) printings, both of which are dated 1930. The only difference between them is the absence of the First Edition notice on the verso of the title page in the second printing The first and second printing bindings are notoriously bad and this copy shows typical signs. The cloth is now protected in a heavy mylar cover. Note: I have a large selection of Kenneth Roberts books and related materials. Contact me if you are looking for something in particular. Colby College Press, Waterville, ME, 1951. Softcover (Saddle-stapled). Good Condition. Pamphlet Inscribed by Author. A scarce bit of ephemera, especially inscribed by Roberts. The copies I have seen are marked as Christmas gifts to friends in 1951. This copy is inscribed on the title page to Dr. Oscar Johnson by Roberts. The Christmas notation at the bottom of the page next to the year of publication is almost completely washed away by the water. The text was originally written by Roberts as his last article for the Saturday Evening Post (Bales, 1993, p. 87) and reprinted by Colby College Press. There is a four page catalog of publications at the rear of the text. Note: I have a large selection of Kenneth Roberts books and related materials. Description:
Doubleday, Doran & Company, Garden City, NY, 1940. Limited Edition. Hardcover (in Slipcase). Fine Condition. Illustrator: Grant Wood (Frontis). Book Signed by Author. A beautiful set of the Limited Edition in the original slipcover. Signed by Roberts on the limitation page at the front of Volume 1 and numbered #477 of 1,000 (plus 50 unnumbered copies). This novel was revolutionary for its time because Roberts presents a favorable treatment of the Tory position during the American Revolution -- an approach that resulted in critical reviews and angry letters (see Bales, 1993, p. 77). While the novel covers the whole war, it highlights the often overlooked movement of the theater to the southern states following the British defeat at Saratoga. As a result, it both continues the story from Arundel and Rabble and Arms and provides an alternative perspective from the Patriots side in the earlier novels. What all three share in common is what Bales describes as "a Roberts narrator [who] sees… Read More

Description:
Doubleday & Company, Garden City, NY, 1949. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/Very Good-. Book Signed by Author. Well-preserved copy of Roberts' account of the research for and writing of his novels featuring a signed bookplate pasted on the front paste-down. Roberts was always generous in signing books for his readers, but by the mid- to late-1940s had switched to provided signed bookplates, rather than having the books sent to him for signing. For all of his adult life Roberts kept a small diary with daily entries. He drew from those and his correspondence and research files to provide a detailed description of his process of tracking down details to provide the most accurate accounts he could in his novels. There is a lengthy appendix (90+ pages) that includes: the transcript of the diary of Henry Sewall from the Revolutionary War, the transcript of a letter by Capt. Daniel Merrill from Saratoga in 1777, a complaint about the Pulitzer Prize committee that… Read More
