This wonderful book, which was the annual yearbook of the geological survey department for 1916 (although published four years later) contains a survey of mineral resources for the state, by N. O. Barrett. It also contains two monographs: Clay Depositis Near Mountain Glen, Union County, Illinois, by Stuart St. Clair; and Structure of the La Salle Anticline, by Gilbert H. Cady. What really makes this book terrific are the nine pull-out maps and charts that accompany the second monograph, all in superb condition. The book was previously held in a cement company library, but there are only a few stampings. There is a small ding to the spine, but the binding is sound. The copy in hand is the thrid printing of the second printing of the second edition, with corrections, if you can follow that. It appears to have been updated to 1957. Discouragingly, the last paragraph of text begins: "The Kashmir problem has been before the Security Council for more than a decade, but no solution has been reached...." The first few pages are a bit creased, due to shelfwear, but the book shows no signs of having been read. There are no inscriptions or markings. There is a fold-out map of medieval India at the front, and two fold-out maps, of India in 1947 and again in 1956, all pristine. The jacket is almost pristine as well. This quite a dense, scholarly work which would be of great interest to the researcher investigating the New Deal legacy, the history of Fannie Mae, that sort of thing.
