[Venice,: stamperia dei Giunta,, 1565].. 302 by 378mm (12 by 15 inches).. Double-page woodcut map. Second state of Gastaldi's map of the Western Hemisphere, originally published in the third volume of Ramusio's compendium of voyages, 'Delle Navigationi et Viaggi', 1556. With the page numbers '455' and '456' appearing in the top left and top right of the map, respectively. Printed from the second of three woodblocks, the first was destroyed in a fire at the Giunta premises in November of 1557. This hemispherical map depicts both American continents, extends to show the Molucca islands in the west, and Africa, Spain, and Ireland in the east, large and incomplete landmasses in the north and south, extending beyong the 'Circolo Artico' and 'Circolo Antartico'. The northernmost reaches of North America are left blank, thereby avoiding making a statement about contemporary speculation of a land bridge to Asia and depicts Japan with two islands. Notably, this is the first printed map bearing place names… Read More

New York,: Ziff-Davis for PC World,, 1995.. 622 by 952mm. (24.5 by 37.5 inches).. Colour printed folding map, printed on both sides. As the legend says: "There are tons of freebies sitting on the Web, FTP, and Gopher sites all over the world. The major categories you'll find here are Applications & Utilities, Internet Software, Resources, and Entertainment & Games. Everybody wants to try out our new software, so that predominates. But don't overlook the Net's many and varied resources, they offer some surprising advantages. Naturally, once you've finished with all the useful stuff you'll want something entertaining. All work and no play, after all…" Signed by the artist, lower left, this early map of the internet is clearly inspired by the form famously pioneered by Harry Beck, for his map of the London Underground, in 1933. This "hub-and-spoke" method of data visualization, untangles the maze that is the world wide web, into four separate threads: 'Applications and Utilities', 'Internet… Read More

F is for Fraudster Engraved trade card. The Random of """"Random & Stainbank"""" was none other than infamous stock-market rigger, the mysterious """"Colonel de Bourg"""", who arrived late at night on the 20th of February 1814, fresh off a boat from Calais, with the (fake) longed-for news that Napoleon was dead. When the Stock Exchange opened the next morning, Government bond prices when through the roof,... and de Bourg and his co-conspirators began to sell off thousands of pounds worth of Omnium bonds that they had invested in only the week before. Augustus Charles Random de Berenger, born plain Charles Random, married a wealthy Prussian baroness, and so adopted her title as his own. Before he hit upon the idea of stock market fraud as a way to make a living, he worked as a colourist at Rudolph Ackermann's establishment in… Read More

Sheet: each 500 by 670mm (19.75 by 26.5 inches).. Two engravings with aquatint and original hand colour, large closed tear, skilfully repaired. Benjamin Read's Regency fashion prints were the most successful advertising of their day. Read was a tailor by profession, but realised the potential for producing high quality prints of his wares. Ralph Hyde suggests that Read was inspired originally by the 'Monstrosities' of George Cruikshank, the satirist, who would produce an annual print of the worst offenders against fashion and the latest ridiculous trends. Read initially employed Cruikshank's younger brother, Robert, but by the time these examples were produced his name had disappeared from the prints. They were particularly effective not only because of their distinctive style and elegant colour, but also because they showed… Read More

The Post Office was designed by Sir Robert Smirke and built between 1823 and 1829, suggesting that the print was made soon after to celebrate its opening. The exceedingly rare first, and only, edition of Rennell's charts of ocean currents. Published posthumously by his daughter, the present atlas would become a foundation work of Oceanography and, "provides a departure point for oceanographic research up to the present" (Speake). The work consists of five charts on ten sheets covering the Atlantic Ocean, parts of the Caribbean, and the Cape of Good Hope in unprecedented detail and scientific rigour. Charts I and II cover the eastern and western Atlantic Ocean, respectively; chart III: southern Africa, the Lugallus Current and the counter current from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean; chart IV: currents between the Indian and South Atlantic… Read More

[London]: Th[omas] Richardson & Sons,, 1790.. 585 by 326mm. (23 by 12.75 inches).. Manuscript plan ink with wash colour, manuscript inscription to verso, minor dust soiling to corners, tear to upper portion of map skilfully repaired. This elusive plan of Queens Leaze in Berkshire is an example of one of the many surveys conducted in the eighteenth century in order to record the extent and use of crown lands. King George III had a passion for geography, amassing a personal collection of over 50,000 maps, which are now in the keeping of the British Library. Under his reign, the mapping industry saw great progression in the instruments and principles used by cartographers, giving rise to more accurate geographical representations, as expertly exhibited by the Ordnance Survey which began the year after this plan was produced. There is evidence that the surveyor of Queens Leaze, Thomas Richardson, had previously worked on the king's cartographical projects, with his plan of Richmond completed "under the… Read More

A view of St James's Park, from what is now Buckingham Palace. In 1736 Buckingham House was the private residence of Sir Charles Sheffield, built for his ancestor John Sheffield, 1st Duke of Buckingham, in 1703 by William Winde. The Duke had decided that his old residence, Arlington House, was not grand enough. Its replacement was the most extravagant building in London, with a wide forecourt around a large fountain, and avenues of elm and lime trees leading up across the park. After the second Duke and his heir died, Sir Charles inherited the title and sold Buckingham House to George III in 1761, who wanted a London residence with more privacy for his wife and family. Jacques Rigaud (c1681-1754) was a French topographic engraver and dealer, opening a shop in Paris in 1720. He produced a series of prints of royal… Read More
