Description:
Illustrated with 15 large folding plates. 4to. Modern ½-leather-backed boards. Paris, Ph.-D. Pierres, 1788. First Edition. In 1785 the French surgeon Jacque René Tenon was required by royal command to make a scientific study of European hospitals. He traveled for 18 months in France, England and Germany, after which he prepared and published his report, which revealed the appalling conditions prevailing in Parisian hospitals. This was particularly true of the Hotel-Dieu. With great foresight, he proposed a series of reforms. He believed particularly that "there must be rooms in which to prepare for operations, for the operations themselves, and for those who have undergone operations; these rooms must be removed from noise and from infection." Tenon's work had a prodigious effect and profoundly influenced the King and the public. His proposed reforms were upset by the French Revolution, but nevertheless served during the 19th century as the conceptual guide for the majority of European hospitals. A…

Description:
Illustrated with 16 original etchings printed in colors by Erhard Amadeus Dier, each signed in pencil. 8vo. Original red morocco-backed boards, gilt-lettered on front cover and spine. Vienna: Artur Wolf Verlag, 1927. First Edition of this suite of prints, after the 1924 edition of the text. An arresting series of images by the Austrian artist Erhard Dier, who was a student of Camillo Sitte and Josef Jungwirth at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Dier worked on designs for Austrian banknotes, tapestries, porcelain, wallpapers, and church windows. While generally known for a florid and temperate style, the present suite offers dramatic contrast, evoking some of the darker spirit found in the work of artists like Gustave Doré or Odilon Redon. Dier contributed to many issues of Die Muskete around this time, always credited as "Amadeus" and hence explaining the difficulty in tracing his full body of work. Stain on front cover; light wear at corners; 2 etchings sprung; o/w fine. Scarce.

Description:
Two parts in one volume.Illustrated title pages in decorative woodcut architectural borders, woodcut initials. Thick 8vo. Modern brown morocco, spine with raised bands and gilt lettering. London: In Aedibus Richardi Tottell, 1576. Second Edition of Brooke's abstract of the year-books down to the writer's own time. (Sweet and Maxwell I, p. 187. STC 3828; Beale R471 and R472.) It was based principally on Fitzherbert's work, but contains much new material. Brooke's work fully abridges the Year Books of the reigns of Henry VII and Henry VIII. He abridges over 20,000 cases under alphabetical headings. Coke considered it "a worthy and painful work and an excellent repertory or table for the Year Books of the law." A little-known Shakespearean association. The closing lines of Shakespeare's Prologue to the last act of Henry V are as follows: "Then brook abridgement, and your eyes advance / After your thoughts, straight back again in France." "Then brook abridgement" was Shakespeare's hidden joke for the…

Soft cover. Fine. . 8vo. Original printed wrappers, stitched as issued. London: Printed for Private Circulation Only by Richard Clay and Sons, Ltd. 1921. First Edition. One of 30 copies printed for Thomas J. Wise. (Ashley Library, IV, 156.) Presentation copy from Wise to John Drinkwater. For John Drinkwater from Thos. J. Wise. John Drinkwater wrote an introduction to the fourth volume of The Ashley Library: A Catalogue of Printed Books, Manuscripts and Autograph Letters Collected by Thomas James Wise (1923). This was (Wises) greatest bibliographical achievement, a complete catalogue of his books, with full descriptions and collations. The first two volumes were published in 1922 and volumes 3-4 the next year. The massive and still very useful book was to run to a final total of eleven volumes. Each volume had a preface by a different luminary. . . The edition was limited to 250 copies of which 50 were on special paper. This was a short enough limitation to cause quite a scramble for copies and it was…

Description:
Soft cover. Fine. 8vo. Original printed wrappers, lacking back wrapper. Printed by A.H. Pemberton, Columbia, South Carolina 1843. First Edition. Edmund Ruffin was a prominent Virginia slaveholder and extremist linked with the Fire-Eaters, an unorganized group of extremist pro-slavery Southerners who urged the separation of southern states into a new nation. He is widely believed to have fired the first shot at Fort Sumter, sparking the Civil War. Ruffin was also a dedicated agricultural pioneer responsible for many advances in farming techniques. Increasingly despondent after the surrender of Robert E. Lee, Ruffin decided to commit suicide. On June 17th, 1865, he went up to his study and wrote one final diary entry before taking his life: And now with my latest writing and utterance, and with what will [be] near to my latest breath, I here repeat, & would willingly proclaim, my unmitigated hatred to Yankee rule to all political, social and business connections with Yankees, & to the perfidious,…

Description:
Soft cover. Very Good. Illustrated with several woodcuts. 8vo. Original plain wrappers. A Paris, Firmin-Didot . . . 1804. First Edition. A series of four essays, the first being a historical notice of various experiments on heat, and a sort of scientific autobiography describing his own experiments. The paper is remarkable for its lively description of Rumfords relationships with such contemporaries as Davy, Leslie, Biot, Bertholet, Laplace, Playfair, and De Saussure . . . The second essay is the translation of his Enquiry Concerning the Nature of Heat; while the third, Mémoire sur la Chaleur, is a summary of his research on heat read before the Institut National 25 June 1804. The last, Observations sur les Puits is a translation of a paper presented to the Royal Society in November of 1803, and describes the holes which form in the glaciers at Chamonix during the summer. It is related to his studies on the propagation of heat in fluids from which he concluded that water is not a conductor of…
