Description:
Autograph Letter Signed by a Harvard Professor, dated October 19, 1909. 1 page, on the letterhead of The Harvard Union, with a red embossed figure of a tower. The professor, who signs in slightly illegible hand "Gilbert T. Saph..." writes about a "talk I made to the Negroes of my community."The writer of this letter offers that it is not usual for him to repeat his own speeches, but he does not mind sending along the manuscript. As to why he makes these speeches, he explains "I do it because I cherish that what I said may be helpful to Negroes in other parts of the Country, and also to some of our own people." An interesting letter on race relations, showing that in a time of unequal educational opportunities and prejudice, there were some educators who cared to disperse important learning across racial lines and worked toward race equality.

[African-American][Alabama] Culligan and Morgan's Alabama Minstrel Annual Tour poster, Printed in Ohio, illustrations by the National Press and Eng. Co., Chicago, circa 1900-1915. Measures approximately 10.5" x 27" on brown paper. Minstrelsy, an American theatrical form popular from the early 19th to the early 20th century, was founded upon the comic enactment of detrimental racial stereotypes. The earliest minstrel shows were staged by white male minstrels (traveling musicians) who, with their faces painted black, caricatured the singing and dancing of enslaved people. In bold black lettering, the poster advertises the annual tour for T.J. Culligan and Fred A. Morgan's Alabama minstrels, referring to the show as "The Highest Class Minstrel Show in the World", showcasing "The Finest Band of Any Show on Earth". Below this is a large monochromatic illustration of the "waterproof mammoth tent" in which the show is being held, along with an illustration of five minstrels caricaturizing the singing and…

Description:
Brown, Judith; Jones, Beverly. 1968. Toward a Female Liberation Movement. Boston, Mass. The New England Free Press published radical literature by feminists from the late sixties to the early eighties. In this particular essay, authors Beverly Jones and Judith Brown respond to the "Women's Manifesto" that was created at the 1967 Students for a Democratic Society convention. This rather scathing piece admonishes the grouping together of various social justice movements (in this case, women's liberation and civil rights) and encourages feminists to refocus on dismantling chauvinism and advancing their own cause. As the essay unfolds, Jones and Brown acknowledge that African Americans and women each face oppression; however, they reject the inclusion of any other marginalized groups in their efforts, stating that "people don't get radicalized fighting other people's battles." This staple-bound booklet, while age-toned, is in excellent condition. This fascinating artifact highlights the often discordant…

Description:
[Film] Akira Kurosawa's Shakespearian samurai epic "Ran". Large archive of 15 original vintage lobby cards. Ran is a medieval Japanese samurai epic based on Shakespeare's King Lear. Kurosawa spent ten years prepping for the film by storyboarding every shot in the film as paintings and designing costumes. The massive film used approximately 1400 extras and 200 horses and earned Kurosawa his only Best Directing Academy Award nomination. All 15 original vintage lobby card measure 9.5" x 11.5" and are printed in color. Images feature sprawling action shots of some of the samurai battle scenes, horses running through water, men charging on fields and several close-ups of Tatsuya Nakadai and Meiko Harada in several emotional scenes. All feature the title RAN in English and Japanese. Small text on margin reads "Ein Film Von Akira Kurosawa", so these were probably issued for the European release of the film. The title Ran has been variously translated as "chaos", "rebellion", or "revolt.; Some tape remnant on…

Ayn Rand. THE FOUNTAINHEAD The First Edition Library - FEL. Hardcover Shelton, CT. Facsimile First Edition with Facsimile dust jacket. This Facsimile Edition looks just like the 1943 original First Edition that cost around $30,000 today in this condition. The Fountainhead is a 1943 novel by Russian-American author Ayn Rand, her first major literary success. The novel's protagonist, Howard Roark, is an individualistic young architect who designs modernist buildings and refuses to compromise with an architectural establishment unwilling to accept innovation. Roark embodies what Rand believed to be the ideal man, and his struggle reflects Rand's belief that individualism is superior to collectivism. In very good condition. These Facsimile Editions are becoming scarce and collectable in their own right.
