Description:
Paris: Chez Ferdinand Bastien, 1798. First edition illustrated, three volumes, octavos. In good condition, all edges gilt, tooling to the spine, expertly rebacked. All plates present. An attractive set. One of the great writers of world literature, François Rabelais is considered among the creators of modern European writing (Bahtin, 1984). His most renowned work is Gargantua and Pantagruel, and its satire and scatalogical humor of this time of censorship and increasing religious oppression have won Rabelais consideration as "....the greatest writer in the French language" (Le Clézio, 2008). The French novelist Honoré de Balzac was directly inspired by Rabelais to write his Les Cent Contes Drolatiques, and he quotes Rabelais lavishly in his La Comédie humaine (Brix, 2005).

Description:
London: Robert White, 1677. Early printing of this classic work. Folio, bound in full calf, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, morocco spine label, additional engraved title (dated 1676), engraved frontispiece and 8 double-page maps and plans. In very good condition. The success of Raleigh’s History can perhaps be explained by the very fact that it is not a work of history in the academic sense but a political tract of immediate applicability. Its author embodied all the glories of the reign of Elizabeth I, which at the time of publication had already begun to be transfigured into a golden age Raleigh can be taken as the epitome of the Elizabethan idea of courtier and politician, sailor and explorer, writer and poet He was among the first Englishmen to envisage clearly that the Americas should be the principal goal of English overseas expansion The reversal of Elizabeth’s policy by James I encompassed Raleigh’s ruin He finally fell a victim to James’s pro-Spanish inclinations,… Read more

Description:
Cologne: Taschen, 1998. First edition of this classic work. Quarto, original boards, illustrated. Fine in a fine dust jacket. His art is about high-octane masculinity, with every straining muscle of these muscular bodies lovingly detailed under clothing about to rip apart at the seams. And that includes the crucial zone below the belt, both fore and aft. There was nothing ambiguous about Tom of Finland's interest in his objects of desire: "lf I don't have an erection when I'm doing a drawing, I know it's no good", he himself said. The eroti-cism is naked, even aggressive. The poses inevitably consigned his work to the pornography shelves, and the walls of leather bars in the gay scene. So far there has been no account of the artistic virtuosity of his work.

Description:
Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill Company, 1943. First edition, first issue with first edition stated on the copyright page of the author's first major novel, as well as her first best-seller. Octavo, original red cloth. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Jack L. Warner - Thank you for your courage and for a magnificent picture - with my profound gratitude - Ayn Rand. January 7, 1949." The recipient, Jack Warner, was the co-founder, president, and driving force behind the Warner Bros. Studios. His career spanned some 45 years, its duration surpassing that of any other of the seminal Hollywood studio moguls. Rand sold the film rights to Warner several years earlier with the contractual proviso that she would provide the screenplay, which would be unalterable. In fact, the director wanted changes, but Warner supported the author and honored the contract. This book's inscription, clearly referring to this, was presented about a half year prior to the film's release. Of… Read more
