Heliogravure, after a photograph, 31.3 x 24.7 cm (printed surface 26.7 x 16.7 cm). = The versatile French naturalist Jean Louis Armand de Quatrefages de Bréau (1810-1892) published on invertebrates, including molluscs and annelids, and on anthropological and ethnographical subjects. He was chairman of the department of anthropology and ethnography at the Muséum. This portrait, showing him at the end of his life, was published posthumously in the Muséum's "Nouvelles archives". Some light soiling, discolouring and fraying to the very outer lower margin; the portrait itself clean and in a strong impression. Rare.

Marbled flyleaves. = Second, improved and expanded edition of this important standard work on the south German Jurassic deposits dividing it in eighteen zones, according to their petrographical development and palaeontological features, with the Lias and the brown and white Jura each resolved into six zones. Very detailed. This is an offprint, dedicated, on the half title, by the author to the Dutch marine biologist Ingvar Kristensen. With the latter's name written in the top margin of the front wrapper. Otherwise a clean, very good copy.

Spine with gilt lines and title. = Of this informative and well-written work by the Irish journalist and travel writer Michael Joseph Quin (1796-1843) there are two third, expanded editions. One printed in London, and this much less common - different - Paris edition. The author provides a list of expenses of all legs of his journey (e.g. fare in steam-boat from Pesth to Moldava 43 francs), and includes an appendix, "Treaty of Alliance concluded between Russia and Turkey on the 8th of July, 1833," in French and translated into English.
