Description:
NP: np, 1811. One of several editions of this speech printed in 1811. 8vo. 19, (1) pp. Presentation slip to "Revd. Professor Norton" (Andrews Norton, 1786-1853, Biblical scholar and Dexter Professor of Sacred literature in the Harvard Divinity School), signed by Quincy, tipped-in at the title page. Quincy (1772-1864), served in the U.S. House of Representatives from Massachusetts, 1805-1813, here opposing admission of Louisiana as a state on the grounds that the federal government's limited powers included no authority to enlarge the borders of the "Union"; his rant had little effect and Louisiana was admitted to the Union, 30 April 1812. Quincy later served as mayor of Boston, 1823-1829, and as president of Harvard University, 1829-1845. American Imprints 23772. Thompson 1087: "Admission of new territory violates the constitution and is grounds for secession." Later blue wrappers (worn). (#5467).
