He served as principal of New Vienna (Ohio) Academy (1861-1864); Huntingdon Normal School; Brethren's Normal College; and Juniata College (1879-1888). He was one of the first Brethren to hold protracted evangelistic meetings. In 1856 he moved to Poland, Ohio to become Assistant Editor of the Gospel Visitor.
