Unusual names given to towns all over America and the stories of how and why they were given the names. Tuscaloosa, Alabama was named for Chief Tuskaloosa a 7 foot tall Indian Chief from the area. Scratch Ankle, Alabama (the books namesake) came from a city in Monroe County where it was said that the cow pens near the railroad had flys so thick that the train crew would be seen scratching thier ankles when the train came through near the pens.
