Archive of letters, photographs, drawings, published books and articles of Percy A Wells (1867-1956), a cabinet maker and disciple of William Morris, who lectured, taught and wrote extensively during the later phase of the Arts and Crafts movement in Britain. Wells, whose typescript autobiography is included in the archive followed an apprenticeship in London's City Road with early practice as a cabinet maker before working alongside William Lethaby at the Central School and subsequently leading the cabinet department at the Shoreditch Technical Institution in London. His two most significant works, both published by Batsford, were Modern Cabinet Work (1909) which brought him to a wider audience and Furniture for Small Houses (1924) but as revealed by this archive, his work went much wider. Description:
London: Nova Publications Ltd, 1956. No Binding. Near Fine. (15x14cm) A highly accomplished original pen and ink illustration by Gerard Quinn for the short story 'Five into Four' published in the journal, Science Fantasy 10, September 1954. The image shows four men, perhaps journalists, crowded around an attractive woman who is resisting questioning, with handwritten and typed publication notes to the verso. The typed label reads 'QUINN Five into Four by J T McIntosh Science Fantasy 10' with similar in pen above and 'Nova'. At the time of publication Science Fantasy was under the editorship of John Carnell who commissioned much of Quinn's work during this period. Like so much commercial illustrative work drawings such as these were viewed as essentially disposable and original artwork of this type is uncommon. Near Fine 1956
