Bernard Quaritch issued his first catalogue in 1847 but surviving catalogues from the mid-ninetenth century are infrequently seen. The contents comprise: Bibliography, Literary History, Typography, Encyclopaedias pp 1-15; New Books 16; Latest Purchases of Old Books 17; Books wanted to Purchase 19. Good. Laid in is an advertisement leaf for "The Life, Times, and Scientific Labours of Edward Somerset, Sixth Earl and Second Marquis of Worcester; to which will be added a reprint of his Century of Inventions, with a commentary thereon by Henry Dircks, Civil Engineer, &c. &c.

The spine has been discreetly protected with cloth tape toning with the covers.

Indiana University, but the unpriced Catalogue was circulated "selectively" because of its interest to Gissing collectors. A priced 4 pp insert of some duplicate items consigned by the Lilly Library is laid in. Top of front wrapper a little faded, otherwise Very Good.

The manuscripts range from the twelfth to the end of the seventeenth century; the countries of origin being almost equally divided between England, France and Italy, with a few manuscripts of German or Netherlandish work." - Introduction. An astonishing production, with a triple-column index of books and subjects occupying some 229 pp and giving the catalogue a continuing reference value. Bernard Quaritch, London, 1969 reprint of 1892-1921 edition. Cloth, 8vo,. 350 pp. Rosenblum: "An alphabetical list of seventy-eight collectors. Each entry includes a biographical sketch and a catalog of principal books. The sketches also discuss the disposition of the collection. Some entries are brief, such as that for Stanesby Aichorne (d. 1800), whose library contained only about 200 volumes - but nine of them had come from the press of William Caxton, the first English printer. The Aichorne library was purchased en bloc by Lord Spencer, who kept some of the books and sold the rest. Major collectors receive more attention. Thus, the Fourth Earl of Ashburnharn receives fourteen pages; his library included nearly 4,000 manuscripts, as well as a wealth of printed material. With selected portraits and occasional facsimiles. Front endpapers partly yellowed, otherwise Very Good.

No other copy located of this one, although the Library of Congress appears to have otehrs similar and Quaritch catalogues of the period include mention of other Desiderata catalogues numbered '2' and '15'. Quaritch not infrequently included a page or two of desiderata at the end of his sale catalogues. The 8 pages here are densely packed with items wanted, including "cheap" copies of Shakespeare 2nd and 4th folios. Elsewhere, Quaritch advertises that his desiderata are circulated frequently to an extensive network of agents across Europe, often permitting him to procure out-of-print works. Bernard Quaritch, London, first edition, 1868. Half leather, raised bands, gilt spine titles, edges marbled, marbled endpapers, thick 8vo,. viii, 1130 pp. Over 14,701 entries. A wonderful catalogue. After the main catalogue of 933 pages, arranged by subject, comes nearly 100 pages of "latest purchases" which includes a "choice selection" from the stock of H G Bohn, Quaritch's great rival who had recently retired. There is an appendix of 24 pages of books wanted for purchase; and an index of 50 pages arranged in 3 columns of extremely small print. In the introduction to his 1870 catalogue Quaritch noted that it had been found too laborious and expensive to repeat the effort of creating such a complete index, and the later catalogue has a much abbreviated one. Covers detached and split along joints into separate boards and spine, covers in any case worn and stained. Contents Good.
