Dayton, Ohio: United Brethren Publishing House, 1874. First Edition. . Hardcover. See Description. 8vo. 404p. [Page numbering jumps from p.384 to p.389, however, no parts are missing]. Bound in pebbled brown publisher’s cloth. Some fraying and wear to the head and tail caps; 19th century book plate on inside front cover. Pages are clean. The United Brethren of Christ, a product of the 18th century inter-denominational renewal movement, were the first denomination to begin in the United States. The sect originated in Pennsylvania (1767) under the guidance of P.W. Otterbein, a German Reformed pastor, and Martin Boehm, a Mennonite preacher. The movement, at first, was a loose confederation of Lutherans, Reformed Lutherans, Mennonites and Methodists. In 1800 the Brethren officially organized. They elected Otterbein and Boehm as bishops. Later a doctrine was agreed upon similar to ones held by the Moravians and the Methodists.
