Top edge gilt. = Third, much expanded edition of the famous catalogue, which enumerates all the species in the collection of Friedrich Paetel (1812-1888), one of the largest-ever private shell collections in the world. Provenance: stamp of the American malacologist Richard Irwin Johnson (1925-2020) in the top margin of the first front free endpaper and title page. A very good, attractively bound copy.

Berlin, Gebrüder Paetel, 1875. 8vo (22.4 x 15.1 cm). Contemporary grained half morocco over shagreen boards. Spine with five raised, gilt-ornamented bands and gilt title. Salmon endpapers; yellow edges. = Compiled and published by German conchologist Friedrich Paetel (1812-1888). The catalogue is based upon one of the largest 19th-century private shell collections. It has long been used as a reference to names, authors and locations. The work alphabetically lists all the genus and family names known by Paetel after 25 years of research, and includes synonyms and names wrongly used. As such still of value today. A very attractively bound copy.

Dresden, Oscar Weiske, 1869. 8vo (22.4 x 13.8 cm). xiv, 119 pp. Contemporary limp vellum with script title on the spine. = This is the first of a series of catalogues of species from one of the largest 19th-century collections. With a preface by Schaufuss. Long used as a reference to names, authors and locations. As such it is still of value today. A former owner added, in an old hand, an additional list of Patella species (tipped in on the lower margin of p. 65). Provenance: small stamp of the American malacologist Richard Irwin Johnson (1925-2020) in the top margin of the front free endpaper and title page; minute pencil ticks throughout; otherwise an excellent, clean copy. Bound copies, such as this one, are rare.

Original printed wrappers. = One of the rarest, and best-illustrated contributions to the Malayan lepidopterid fauna by the German medical doctor and entomologist Arnold Andreas Friedrich Pagenstecher (1837-1913). Pagenstecher was responsible for more works on butterflies based on collections gathered during of the zoological and botanical expedition led by Wilhelm "Willy" Kükenthal (1861-1922) in the Malayan region, and in particular present-day Indonesia. Gilt title on spine and front board. Preserved in original printed slipcase (27.3 x 20.0 x 4.4 cm). = A very well-illustrated and rare monograph on the aphids of Korea and adjacent regions. The full colour plates are excellent, and so are the detailed text drawings of taxonomically important parts. In his preface the author thanks the Dutch entomologist Hille Ris Lambers. On the title page is a dedication to Lambers, signed by Paik. Some light shelfwear. A pencil annotation on one text leaf (new species identification), otherwise a very good, clean copy.

China, ca. 1880. Large painting on glass (85.0 x 54.0 cm) in contemporary Chinese wooden frame (91.7 x 60.7 cm). = A Chinese reverse painting on glass. This method of painting has a long history in China. These kind of paintings reached Europe in the 18th century and immediately became quite popular. Many were deliberately made for export. Due to their fragility, few examples have survived until this day, and they are therefore much sought-after, fetching high prices at auction. A painting of this unusually large size is not very common. This is an example from the late Qing-dynasty. It likely depicts a ceremony, as the children's toys each carry a red ribbon and light. The toys are all animals (a dog, deer, hog, and falcon). A very decorative and amazing painting in a very good state, with bright and vivid colouring. The frame is very good, and in its original state.

The majority of the papers deal with the geology and palaeontology of Normandy. The 1962 Sonderausgabe, Festband Hermann Schmidt is included. Most issues clean, only a few with a stamp on the front wrapper. A very good series.
