Folio, 45 x 28.5 cm, Forty two engraved plates. William Pain 's last book, assisted by his son James, the later became a pupil of John Nash and a practicing architect in Ireland. It devotes one third of its plates to four complete designs for town houses, the rest to their fixtures and fittings. Pain's works were very influential in spreading the Adamesque as a vernacular style, especially in America. . ARCHER. 239.1. COLVIN. pp.606-607. SCHIMMELMAN. 97. WIEBENSON. III-C-24. Very good. 492, 700 pages. 24.5 x 19 cm, First modern edition, and first reprint since 1580, and the best edition of this important source book for Shakespeare (amongst others), printed from the early editions. These early tragedies herein adumbrate a large portion of the Elizabethan drama. Haslewood has added some biographical notes, including collations of all the early editions, and notes on the variations of the text. Painter, clerk of Queen Elizabeth's Ordinance compiled the collection of stories, and like others amassed a personal fortune through embezzlement, endemic in the Elizabethan civil service. An austerely, wide margined but finely printed work. Book labels, very clean and fresh internally, slight toning first few endpapers Vol.I, modest extremity rubbing, tight binding, raised bands gilt decorated.
