Description:
Basel. Switzerland: Michael Furter, 1513. Disbound. Very good. Postillia super epistolas et euangelia (Commentaries on epistles and gospels) has traditionally been attributed to Guilemus Pariesiensis, because a preface in an early manuscript edition appeared to have been signed by him, however today, Johannes Herlot is often credited as its author. More than one hundred editions of the Postilla super epistolas et evangelia were printed during the late 15th and early 16th centuries, qualifying it as one of the first 'best sellers'. Sales were driven by members of the clergy desiring a better understanding of Epistles and the Gospels found in the Bible. This leaf (approximately 6" x 8") comes from a printing made by Michael Furter at Basel in 1513. The illustration (approximately 2" x 2½") is titled In festo corporis christi Euangelium Joannis. VI.f. (On the feast of the body of Christ, the Gospel of John. 6. f.), which is also known as the "Feeding of the 5,000," the only miracle of Jesus (other…

Description:
Augsburg, Germany: Johann Schonsperger, 1519. Disbound. Very good. Die geuerlicheiten, often referred to as simply Theuerdank, was written by Emperor Maximilian I, polished by his secretary, Melchior Pfintzing, and first printed in Augsburg in 1517 by Johann Schonsperger. Trimmed along the top edge to facilitate its original binding. The book's type was designed by Vinzenz Rockner, the emperor's court secretary, and the woodcuts approved by Maximilian himself, are the work of the great woodcut artists of the time. This literary epic was conceived by Emperor Maximilian (represented in the poem by the hero, Theuerdank,) to celebrate his heroic feats in overcoming the difficulties on his journey to win his bride, Mary of Burgundy (die Kunigin Ernreich in the poem). Maximilian was largely responsible for writing the poem and had made the first drafts in 1505-08. This leaf (8" x 13"), printed in 1519 by Johann Schonsperger, was from the second edition, which was a line-by-line reprint of the first.…
