Description:
Palermo: Centro di studi filologici e linguistici siciliani, 1978. First Edition. Fine. Large 8vo. 263, [4] pp. Original wrappers, edges almost entirely uncut. Illustrated with 18 full-page photographic plates of high quality. NOT ex-library! Scarce catalogue of fifteenth century books in the Municipal Library of Palermo, a formidable collection of 1,038 incunables (plus three in the Appendix, for which see below). Ours appears to be the only copy currently on the market. Admirably compiled by Giuseppina Li Calsi (1917-2001), the work contains 18 *useful* images of genuinely rare incunables; in other words, this is a catalogue for serious scholars. The collection contains at least three "unica": 1. Andreas de Escobar "Modus confitendi" [Rome: Printer of 'Mercuriales Quaestiones' (Theobaldus Schencbecher ?), about 1473] -- Li Calsi's Appendice I & Tav. VIa-b; 2. Indulgentiae ecclesiarum principalium urbis Romae [Rome: Printer of 'Mercuriales Quaestiones' (Theobaldus Schencbecher?), about 1473] --… Read More

Description:
Lyon: Bibliotheque de la Ville de Lyon, 1967. First Edition. Very good. 4to. [4], iii, 106, [2] ff., printed on rectos only. Original wrappers (a little worn). NOT ex-library! Scarce Supplement to Pellechet's great "Catalogue des Incunables des Bibliotheques publiques de Lyon" published in 1893, which only comprised entries 1-634 (sic!), a work which is freely available on Hathitrust. Parguez's Supplement is, to our knowledge, has no digital surrogate, and indeed is a mimeograph of a typescript. This short-title catalogue gives detailed provenance information (all traced in a useful index) as well as details for every binding. There is a list of towns represented (with the names of specific printers active therein), and a list of printers which also provides a reference to the works which appear in the present catalogue. The final two leaves give errata and addenda. Our copy appears to be the only one on the market. Reference: Bibliographie internationale de l'humanisme et de la renaissance, no.… Read More

Description:
Hartford: D.F. Robinson and H.F. Sumner; stereotyped by James Connor and William R. Cooke, 1834. Good. 2 vols. Vol 1: [2], 3-736, [2] = 738 pp., with frontispiece and 7 plates. Vol 2: [2], 737-995, [9], 1003-1440, [3] = 711 pp., with engraved frontispiece and 5 plates. Bound in speckled calf, spines lettered in gilt. Covered with provincial American dust jacket of cloth, with holes cut out to show title and volume number on spine (cloth covers with minor wear along spines, slightly soiled, corners bumped). Marbled textblock edges, age-toned, foxing throughout. Tissue guards heavily foxed as commonly. In both volumes the ownership inscription of Mr. Isaac Humeston dated March 8, 1835. A striking example of a home-made American cloth "dust jacket," the likes of which we have not encountered. The jackets cover two publisher's leather bindings on the 1834 Hartford Cottage Bible which -- on account of the ingenious construction of their coverings -- have never seen any sunlight. We have noted identical… Read More

Description:
Paris: Chez la vefve Claude de Monstr'oeil, 1616. First Edition. Softcover. Very good. 8vo. 1 f., [6], 96 pp. Collation: A4 A-M8, COMPLETE. Title-page cropped on upper margin affecting the first and largest word "Plaidoyer." Recent sympathetic wrappers in the antique style. The "Affaire Baron," brilliantly argued by Julien Peleus, one of the most esteemed lawyers of his day, in which the eldest son and heir (Pierre, a priest) decides to sue his younger brother (Antoine) to recover the inheritance the former had renounced years earlier. This important trial brings to light the very problematic issue of inheritance when the eldest male son takes his vows, and thereby renounces his birthright and associated lands and properties. The trial took place on April 14, 1616, and was cited in in Article 13 of the Coûtume de Paris; the eldest son Pierre was relieved from the renunciation, and all properties which had subsequently passed to his younger brother and his wife were reverted by the Court. Description:
London: Hamiltons Gallery, 2013. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Oblong folio. Altogether 69, [3] pp. including 27 superb photographic plates, each with captions on opposite page. The new catalogue raisonne of Penn's astonishing "Cranium" series of Animal skeletons, valuable for forensic research, to say nothing of the extraordinary photographic celebration of each specimen. The photographs were first exhibited in 1989 at Pace Gallery London, accompanied only by a flimsy 36 page catalogue. ¶ "Cranium Architecture" sees Irving Penn create a beautiful, absorbing study of animal skulls from the collection of the Narodni National Museum in Prague. From gorilla to giraffe, the photographer treats each subject with fastidious equality - zooming in or moving away to ensure that all the skulls are the same size and placing them in a simple white background. Abstracting the objects so is disorientating and challenges the viewer to look at them in a different way. As the series' title suggests we are… Read More

Paris: (Jean-Baptiste) Gogue & (Jean-François) Nee de La Rochelle, 1776. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Dates: 22 January and following. 8vo. iv, 8 [Ordre des livres], xxxii [Avertissement + Table systematique], 382 pp., 4542 lots [livres] + 51 lots [estampes], of which 3059 lots are PRICED in a contemporary hand. French calf (ca. 1830), worn, triple gilt fillet around sides, rebacked with original smooth spine laid down, two red leather labels ("Catalogue Perrot" and "1776"), blue sprinkled edges, blue marbled pastedowns and endleaves. Old stamp of the Archief der Provincie Antwerpen on title-page and final page ("Afgevoerd" i.e. withdrawn). ¶ The Perrot sale catalogue was a milestone in the classification of knowledge, "remarkable because it adopted a new system of bibliography which, with good reason, had no imitators" (G. Brunet, who wrongly attributed the catalogue to Gogue). R. Blum, "Bibliographia," 1980, correctly attributes the cataloguing and classification to Nee. "His catalogue… Read More

Very good. 9.5 x 7.5 inches. Photographer's blue stamp on verso. JOHN CAGE MURDERS MODERN MUSIC. Extraordinary signed photograph of the transformational avant-garde American composer John Cage (1912-1992) by Jim Tuttle. Taken in Buffalo, NY, in March 1968, Cage points a toy machine gun at the stage in a performance of David Rosenboom's "To That Predestined Dancing Place," a work in three movements scored for "percussion quartet with theatrical elements." The performance occurred at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery for the 2nd Festival of the Arts. At the same event Cage performed his "A Room, She Is Asleep" with the New Percussion Quartet. Signed and inscribed in blue ink by Cage, New York (1970s) to Jennifer Adamson, daughter of the great autograph collector Steve Adamson (1937-2020). In fine condition, although the signature is difficult to read on account of the contrast of the ink on the kettle drums (!) An excellent and unusual John Cage photograph. .

Detroit, MI, 1969. Very good. Original black and white photograph (6.75" x 9.25"), minor wear. ADDED: reproductions of photographs of Richard Austin and Coleman Alexander Young. AFRICAN AMERICAN POLITICAL CANDIDATES CAMPAIGN FOR CHANGE IN RUINED DETROIT. Striking, anonymous photograph of an anonymous crumbling Detroit house, likely taken in 1969 or 1970. The only remaining function of this shell of a "home" was serving as a grotesque billboard advertising hope and change. Affixed to the ruined facade are campaign posters for three African American political candidates running in Detroit's current municipal elections. We have not been able to identify the photographer or if the photograph has been published elsewhere. To suggest that these candidates candidates faced "challenging" conditions would be a gross understatement. Indeed, voters' were justifiably enraged by Detroit's police brutality, widespread racism, extreme socioeconomic disparity, unemployment and underemployment, food deserts, and… Read More

Groundbreaking approach to a biography of England's first printer, based on the evidence, and not mythology. First published in 1925, this is the facsimile reprint on "long-life paper." Plomer (1856-1928) writes with authority, having been Assistant Keeper at the British Museum (Library) and one of the foremost bibliographers in Britain at that time.

Description:
Boston: Frederick T. Gray, 1827. First Edition. Poor. Large 8vo. [6], 491, [1] + "Proposals for publishing by Subscription the Works of George Washington" by Jared Sparks. Waterstains throughout, some of which are ugly (SEE IMAGES) but the paper is strong. Contemporary American sheep, dry and worn, upper joint cracked and just barely holding (SEE IMAGES). A complete copy albeit with significant faults, and priced accordingly. THIS MUNDANE VOLUME IS OF SIGNAL IMPORTANCE IN AMERICAN LITERATURE AS IT CONTAINS ONE OF ONLY TWO STRICTLY CONTEMPORARY ANNOUNCEMENTS OF THE PUBLICATION OF "TAMERLANE, BY A BOSTONIAN," BOTH OF WHICH WERE IGNORED. NO REVIEWS OF "TAMERLANE" WERE EVER WRITTEN, AND AS IS WELL KNOWN THE BOOK FELL INTO UTTER OBSCURITY. NONETHELESS, THESE WERE THE FIRST NOTICES OF EDGAR ALLAN POE AS A WRITER. The announcement in the present publication (Oct. 1827) was preceded by two months in the "United States Reviewe and Literary Gazette" (Aug. 1827). "Tammerlane [...] made practically no… Read More

Description:
New York: Charles Wells, 1833. Hardcover. Very good. N.d. (ca. 1833). 16mo. [2], xiv, [3], 14-227, [4], 230-328, [1], iv-x pp. Contemporary beige calf elaborately gilt, a.e.g. Front free endpaper excised, binding with some minor refurbishment. Bound by Charles Well of New York (?) ¶ Charles Wells was described in New York City Directories as a bookbinder until at least 1832; thereafter he was listed as a bookseller; in 1838 he appears in the Directories as a publisher, and then in 1844 his trade is simply described as "books." There is a good possibility that the present binding came from his shop. Wells may have been the chief importer and user of English-made dies. Not in Edwin Wolf, "From Gothic Windows to Peacocks: American Embossed Leather Bindings, 1825-1855." * Early gift inscription from Ima Hitchcock to Emily Perkins, dated Dec. 25, 1856.
