Page performed experimental researches in electricity during the middle part of the nineteenth century, inventing a forerunner of the induction coil, the self-acting circuit breaker and a reciprocating electromagnetic engine. He served as one of the US Patent Office's two chief examiners between 1841 to 1852, resigning in the latter year to establish the American Polytechnic Journal, which he cofounded with J. J. Greenough and the manufacturer and capitalist Charles Fleischmann (1834-97). Panvinio, a noted antiquary and archeologist, was librarian to Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, the great 16th-century collector and patron of the arts. Panvinio's history of the Roman republic is divided into three books. "In Book I, on topography, he treated the ‘image of the old city—that is, the ancient buildings' (‘priscae urbis imagino, id est, vetusta aedificia'). 1812. [Park, Mungo (1771-1806).] Minute of a conversation with Lord Bathurst on the 23 Decr 1812—relative to Mr Park's Journal. Manuscript document in an unidentified hand. Document concerning the publication of Park's Journal of a Mission into the Interior of Africa by Mungo Park in the Year 1805, which recorded the second and last of the famous explorer's expeditions to Africa. Park had returned to West Africa in 1805 to test his theory that the Niger and Congo rivers were in fact parts of the same river, but drowned in early 1806 after traveling by boat along most of the Niger's course. Park's journal of this expedition, documenting the period between his departure from Gambia and his embarkation on the Niger, was published in 1815 by the African Institution, a British charitable organization formed to create a refuge for freed slaves in Sierra Leone. Unlike earlier medical and legal writers on intersex individuals—i.e., persons with sexually ambiguous genitalia—Parsons rejected the idea that such persons were "monsters" or "errors of nature," instead arguing that "hermaphroditism," as a medical category, did not in fact exist. "For Parsons, hermaphroditism was an illusion, a fundamental misreading of the ‘Fabrick of the Body.' Hermaphrodites were actually only ever women with enlarged clitorises, or, in Parsons' terminology, ‘Macroclitorideae'" (Gilbert, p. 33), and therefore should not be subject to legal or social discrimination. Excellent series of very technical scientific letters to Goudsmit discussing his ongoing investigations in spectroscopy, particularly problems of hyperfine structure and the Zeeman effect. Pasteur began investigating the rabies virus in 1881 (see Garrison-Morton 5481.4), and by 1884 had developed experimental methods of rendering dogs resistant to the disease. In the present paper, delivered on May 19, 1884, Pasteur gave a detailed account of his methods, describing how he weakened the rabies virus by passing it successively from an infected dog to a series of monkeys. Pasteur's draft letter to Frédéric Cazalis, editor of the agricultural magazine Le messager agricole: Revue des associations et des intérêts agricoles du Midi, presenting Cazalis with a copy of his just-published Études sur le vin (1866) and discussing his method of preserving wine by heating—a practice we now call "pasteurization." Pasteur's researches on wine spoilage established the link between each alteration or "disease" of wine and a specific microorganism, and demonstrated scientifically that healthy wine could be preserved by heating it in closed vessels at temperatures between fifty and sixty degrees Celsius. Archivally matted and framed; frame measures 415 x 335 mm. Fine. A handsome half-length portrait of Pasteur in middle age, showing him seated at a table. The photograph appeared in Vol. 8 of the Galerie Contemporaine, a series of woodburytype photographs issued in installments between 1876 and 1884 and later assembled into volumes; it was "the most impressive set of celebrity portraits published in nineteenth-century France, forming a vital visual record of the leading figures who shaped public life, in science and politics as well as the arts, during the Second Empire and the emergent Third Republic" (Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography I, p. 567). Pirou, the photographer, is also known for having made one of the earliest pornographic films, "Le Coucher de la Mariée" (1896). .

Pasteur spent most of his time between 1865 and 1870 investigating the silkworm blight that had plagued French silk manufacturers for the past two decades. During this time he established the independence of the two major silkworm diseases, pebrine and flacherie, and worked hard to establish practical measures against them. One of these methods, described in the present paper, was a method of separating healthy from infected cocoons by use of the microscope. DSB.

(1879 or later). 93 x 62 mm., mounted on printed card measuring 106 x 64 mm. Pasteur's signature ("L. Pasteur") at the foot of the card. Very fine. Excellent signed photograph of Pasteur. Signed photographs of Pasteur are very rare. Photographs that are advertised as signed often contain printed signatures. This is the first authentic autographed photograph of Pasteur that we have handled in forty years. The verso of the mount is printed with an advertisement for Liébert's "Photographie faite la nuit"; i.e. photographs taken with artificial electric light. Liébert began advertising this service in 1879. He spent some time in the American West. See Palmquist and Kailbourn, Pioneer Photographers of the Far West [2000], pp. 369-370). .

Underside rim pierced for hanging. Manufacturer's marks on back. N.d. (but prior to Pasteur's death). Tiny chip at top of plate, otherwise fine. The plate's portrait shows Pasteur in middle age, with his name and birth date below. On the plate's border are scenes commemorating Pasteur's discovery of the rabies and anthrax vaccines, a picture of Pasteur in his laboratory, and a list of some of his other significant accomplishments.
