This copy in English, with the imprint "In Nuova-Jork, dal Signor Torelli Dendi" at the bottom of the rear wrapper. A promotional pamphlet for Pagliano Syrup, "a purifier of the blood." Several pages of testimonials and an index appear at the end of the text. Accompanied by two separate fragments of musical manuscript, one on an oblong sheet, 4 ¼ x 10 ½ inches, four bars on two staves, signed by him below the music, "John K. Paine / Cambridge, 1882," the other on Harvard university notepaper, four bars on two staves, signed below the music "John K. Paine." Paine has been described as "the first American-born composer to achieve fame for large-scale orchestral music" (Wikipedia). All very good. For the lot of three items,

From the unsigned prefatory note: "These leaves were printed by an amateur who had never previously set up more than a few pages of type." OCLC locates a dozen copies. Very good. Baltimore, (MD): Johns S. Bridges, 1914. First edition. 4to. 152, (1) pp. Illustrated from photographs, plates, portraits. Painter (1838-1906), a native of Ireland and a mechanical engineer, moved to Baltimore in 1865, worked in a machine shop and helped develop a universal neck for glass bottles; he eventually patented 85 inventions, including the common bottle cap, a paper-folding machine, and a machine for detecting counterfeit currency (cf. Wikipedia). Inscribed by the compiler in the year of publication. Howes P-36: "About 40 pages on the artist and photographer William H. Jackson, who married Painter's daughter [includes an account of her visit among the Omaha Indians]." Still a good solid copy. Original gilt-stamped burgundy cloth (rubbed, some discoloration from old staining), floral endpapers. (9507).

Palamas (1859-1943) was a Greek poet and a co-founder of the New Athenian School, a central figure in the Greek literary scene of the late 19th century. Inscribed and signed by the two translators on the front endpaper. Very good. Original printed light blue wrappers (spotted, crease in front wrapper). (7218).

Reprinted from the Christian Examiner, January, 1864, and published for "gratuitous distribution, by the committee of citizens who have in charge the sending of petitions to Congress for the establishment of a thorough and uniform ambulance system in the Armies of the Republic." An unsigned preface [by Henry I. Bowditch?].

As a Catholic missionary in Syria, Palgrave "undertook an adventurous journey across Central Arabia in 1862 and 1863. His object was to ascertain how far missionary enterprise was possible among pure Arabs, but he also accepted a mission from Napoleon III, who furnished funds for the journey, for the purpose of reporting on the attitude of Arabs towards France, and on the possibility of obtaining pure Arabian blood-stock for breeding purposes in Europe. Passing as a Syrian Christian doctor and merchant, he found his best protection in his intimate acquaintance with Arabian manners, speech, and letters ... the result of his journey he embodied in one of the most fascinating of modern books of travel" (DAB). Monadnock Block, Chicago: Compliments of The Baldwin Syndicate, 1910. A black & white image, on glossy paper, measuring 22 1/4 x 95 cm. Noted in type: "Road to Globe" [on left]; "Phoenix & Eastern Railway" [left of center]; "Town of Kelvin (500 inhabitants) at right." No. 1, 2 & 3 shafts and tunnels for the copper company are marked by name and arrows on the terrain across the river. A few short tears and nicks to margin of image, one snag at lower right, affecting a few letters in the publishing information, some light soiling (primarily at either end), some creasing from having been rolled up. A very good copy. The Baldwin Syndicate were "Sole F[i]scal Agents, Kelvin-Sultana Copper Company. The Kelvin-Sultana Copper Company was organized in 1910, out of the older Sultana-Arizona Copper Company. The new company went into receivership in 1919, and was re-organized and re-named as the Ray Boston Copper Company.
