Philadelphia: Thomas Dobson, 1788. Seventh Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo. [3], ii-xvi, [5], 22-499, [1] (page of publisher's advertisements). Original smooth calf, spine in six compartments with a maroon morocco label lettered in gilt. Spine shows additional gilt tooling. Lacks the half-title page. The seventh edition, corrected. Evans 21356. Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy: "Natural Theology and Natural Religion"; "Religion and Morality". Paley famous for his "watch and the watchmaker argument" for the existence of God, (to be first published in 1802) was a significant philosopher following Hume, and preceding Jeremy Bentham. He would posit a theistic explanation for why we ought to work for the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people, which would be later rejected by Bentham. A nice example of a late modern philosophical work. A Very Good book with a few contemporary owner's markings and moderate wear to the crown and heel of the spine.
