Text is first edition, one of 500 copies on laid rag paper ("papier d'Hollande" - copy # not filled in), binding probably not contemporary, Very good condition, with a little foxing, particularly in first part of volume. Includes all eight of the chansons. The famous chanson de geste in 9000 lines, known in a version of a lost original composed about 1180 and attributed to Richard le Pèlerin, a pilgrim who was on the spot and began composition during the siege of Antioch, inspired by the events of 1097–99. The climax of the First Crusade, the conquest of Antioch and Jerusalem, laid the foundations of the Crusader states. The Chanson was elaborated and to a degree mythologized and became part of the Crusader cycle of romances popular in the 14th century. The Chanson was pretty much forgotten until it was printed and published in 1848 (during the Gothic Revival) by the French scholar and medievalist Alexis Paulin Paris (1800-1881), the first holder of the chair of Medieval literature at the Collège… Read More

Description:
Very Good +; the volume, bound in imitation vellum with gold stamping, is in Near Fine condition with no marks or damage of any kind, but the decorated slipcase has a wrinkle at the bottom, although it is not torn or cut, and is solid. This is the first edition of George Braziller's elegant reproduction of Catherine's famous Hours, one of the true masterpieces of illumination to survive from the 15th century. The Hours were commissioned for the marriage of Catherine, Duchess of Guelders and Countess of Zutphen (1417-1479), upon the occasion of her marriage to Arnold, Duke of Guelders, on 26 January 1430. The original work was probably completed about 1440. Dr. John Plummer, Curator of Medieval Manuscripts at the Morgan Library, where the manuscript is housed, wrote the introduction and commentaries.
