Palau would later earn immortality for his "Manuel del Librero Hispano Americano", the 36-volume work that remains the standard Hispanic bibliography. The author, Agostino Palesa, published these notes, based on his admirable collection of rare and important editions of the works of Dante, on the occasion of the sixth centary of the poet's birth. First and only edition of one of the great catalogues of manuscripts, Paulin Paris' thorough, accurate, and detailed catalogue raisonne of French language manuscripts in the Bibliotheque du Roi (now the Bibliotheque Nationale). In his descriptions, which average about three pages in length but which are often much longer, the author provides not only precise descriptions of over 1,000 manuscripts and their contents, but also information concerning provenance and, in many cases, lengthy quotations. An incomparable source for medieval and renaissance French culture: the manuscripts concern literature, hunting, gastronomy, and just about everything else. According to a laid-in slip bearing the printed signature of the librarian of congress, this book was very expensive to produce, and was published in a "very limited edition" for distribution to libraries and other print-collecting institutions (this probably explains why non-ex-library copies, like this one, are so scarce.)
