A very good paperback with flaps, 1st edition, ex-library with stamps, stickers & markings.Écrire l'Histoire de la Papauté en 400 pages est une gageure et dans ce genre d'Histoire, il faut faire un choix ; on ne peut pas tout raconter.L'auteur a choisi de passer rapidement sur les périodes où il se passe peu de chose et d'expliquer longuement les périodes de troubles ou de transition.C'est ainsi que les cinq premiers siècles tiennent à peine en 20 pages.Mais quand vient la première période de grands changements, avec le règne de Léon le Grand, quand le Pape se doit de sauver la civilisation face aux barbares, l'auteur s'attarde à longueur de pages sur l'Histoire des invasions. C'est alors difficile à suivre parce que l'auteur parle des barbares et de leurs rois comme si le lecteur les connaissait tous. Alors il faut, pour bien comprendre, aller voir dans d'autres livres de quoi on parle.collection:

Mais, si le ton de Dominique Pagnier paraît en effet d'une constante et personnelle justesse, c'est que son écriture est adéquate à la nouveauté de sa vision. Des rapports singuliers s'y établissent entre des moments de l'existence quotidienne et les évocations imprévues qu'ils font surgir. Qu'elles appartiennent à l'histoire ou à la tradition religieuse, elles se produisent avec un mélange de naturel et d'évidence presque onirique. L'insolite et la réalité s'y dépaysent mutuellement, ouvrant, en peu de phrases parfaitement pesées, des étendues d'images et d'échos qui se prolongent indéfiniment dans l'émotion et l'imagination du lecteur.
