Many of Pare's illustrations are reproduced, together with portraits of the surgeon aged 45, 65, 68 and 72.

Main body of text printed in double columns, with marginal printed notation. Head and tail pieces, historiated initials. Imprint date uses turned Cs. Running title: C. Plinii Secvndi Natvral Hist. Half calf, spine in seven compartments with leather label, renewed at a later date, retaining earlier marbled boards. Reinforced to hinges with linen. Some spotting, foxing, offsetting etc. A few minor dog-ears. Historic annotation in a neat hand to Lib. VI p.102 "These numbers are doubtless transposed" & to Lib. XXXIII p.653 "Ante de diminuum". A notably significant volume.

The first work by Price, Richard (1723 - 1791) FRS, philosopher, demographer, and political radical. He studied under Vavasor Griffiths at Chancefield, Talgarth. His writings in defence of the American patriots led to an invitation to advise congress conveyed to him by Benjamin Franklin, Arthur Lee, and John Adams. A member of the intellectual societies the Bowood Group and Benjamin Franklin's 'Club of Honest Whigs'. The journal Enlightenment and Dissent remains a focus for the study of Price's thought. This is his first work: the third edition, being greatly enlarged.

In 1794 he emigrated to Pennsylvania where was befriended by Thomas Jefferson as 'one of the few lives precious to mankind'. His achievements have only recently begun to be acknowledged. His metaphysical works influenced Jeremy Bentham, John Stuart Mill, and Herbert Spencer. Priestley saw matter as the manifestation of spiritual force.
