Jay Palmer began his show business career in 1921 as an assistant to vaudeville magician The Great Leon (Leon Harry Levy, 1876-1951), and in later years to Harry Houdini. After marrying Doreen, the couple put together their own act in which Jay performed most of the magic and Doreen provided comedic counterpoint by condescendingly criticizing her husband’s technique. They were much known for their original illusion "The Magic Kettle," in which a small pitcher poured out a seemingly inexhaustible supply of water. Doreen and her husband enjoyed a long popularity, continuing their act on both stage and television into the 1960’s. From the Great Leon estate. Fine condition.

Impassioned oration delivered at Boston’s Melodeon theater by leading 19th century Unitarian minister, Transcendentalist, and social and religious reformer, Theodore Parker. Styled a sermon for Thanksgiving Day, it is in actuality a vehement exhortation against the recently enacted federal Fugitive Slave Law, in retaliation for which Parker had two months previously in this same hall advocated the killing of arresting officers by captured fugitives as justifiable self-defense, igniting a firestorm of condemnation which he here attempts to quell. Impassioned speech condemning the recently passed federal Fugitive Slave Law, delivered at Boston’s Melodeon Theater, Sunday, September 22, 1850 by celebrated reformer Theodore Parker who, although an ordained Unitarian minister, later rejected much of Unitarian theology and dedicated himself to Transcendentalism, becoming a leading figure in the movement. Parker’s views were wont to create considerable conflict in both religious and secular circles, as here where he advocates the murder of officers of the law by their captured fugitive slaves as justifiable under the guise of self-defense.
