Description:
London: Kerby & Endean,, 1878. Wounded whilst gallantly doing his duty" - Major Pack and the Royal Fusiliers at the Redan First edition of this decidedly uncommon, critical firsthand account of service in the Crimea by Colonel Reynell Pack (1817-1860), who was with the 7th Regiment of Foot, the Royal Fusiliers, during the period described. Loosely inserted is a fascinating group of letters addressing Pack's role in the failed attack on the Redan, one of the major actions of the Crimean War. The British suffered severe losses under a withering fire on the approach to the heavily fortified Russian position. Two letters (dated 16 July and 10 August 1855) are from Pack to "My dear General" asking that his role in the fighting be recognized. In response, the July letter is forwarded along with a hand-written note (dated 28 August 1855) from General Sir James Simpson asking that Pack's leadership be acknowledged ("If you can yourself aid him, or put him on the right way to do so - I will have great… Read More

Description:
New York: Holt, Rinhart, and Winston,, 1969. First edition, first printing, inscribed by the author and cover designer at the book's launch event, an invitation for which (using Brainard's starry cover design) is loosely inserted. Padgett's inscription on the title page reads: "For Harvey [illegible] Doneg DONEGAN at the Gotham"; Brainard's inscription on the final leaf reads: "To Harvey, love Joe", with blue ink stars mimicking his cover design surrounding the inscription. The launch event for this collection was held at Manhattan's iconic Gotham Book Mart, which Padgett and Brainard frequented at this time. Padgett (b. 1942) and Brainard (1942-1994) met at high school, where they formed the White Dove Review, which published the writings of Allen Ginsberg and Robert Creeley. After completing a Fulbright scholarship in Paris, Padgett became a central figure in the second generation New York School Poets, a group that included Brainard, Ted Berrigan, Alice Notley, Bill Berkson, and others. Description:
London: Printed for H. D. Symonds,, 1792. The revolutionary debate A pamphlet volume of radical and anti-radical works published in London around the French Revolution, including early editions of both parts of Paine's Rights of Man, the response of future US president John Quincy Adams to Paine, and an apparently unrecorded account of the execution of Louis XVI. The Rights of Man, Paine's great defence of the inalienable rights of the people, and their right to revolution when governments do not uphold these rights, went through many printings in quick succession and met a wide readership, despite the Pitt government's attempts at censorship. Written in response to Edmund Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France, Paine defends the French Revolution and proposes reforms to Britain's own system. John Quincy Adams's response to Paine was first published in an American newspaper in 1791. "Adams' articles did not directly condemn the French Revolution, but they argued against revolutionary change… Read More

Paine defends the French Revolution A contemporary collection including both parts of Paine's great defence of the French Revolution, the Rights of Man, together with Common Sense, his earlier defence of the American Revolution, gathered together in the revolutionary period alongside the tracts of George Rous, offering a more moderate defence of revolutionary ideals in response to Edmund Burke's conservatism. The Rights of Man, Paine's great defense of the inalienable rights of the people, and their right to revolution when governments do not uphold these rights, went through many printings in quick succession and met a wide readership, despite the Pitt government's attempts at censorship. Description:
London: printed for James Ridgway,, 1793. Second edition under this title, following the first of the same year; originally published in 1787 under the title Prospects on the Rubicon. The pamphlet was published "as an attempt to discourage an English war with France, with its inevitable result of additional taxes falling heavily on the poor and bringing ruin to both countries. The pamphlet had not been anti-monarchial; it had, in fact, supported the view of the state as an alliance of the French king and the people against the nobility" (Williamson, Thomas Paine, p. 116). Reference is also made to the use of continental paper money in America. The copy of the Manchester merchant William Johnson Edenson, with his ownership signature to half-title. Octavo (211 x 131 mm). Disbound, earlier sew holes in gutter. Staining in gutter throughout, minor soiling to first and final page. A good copy. ESTC T5861; Goldsmiths 15553; Kress B.2587.

Description:
London: [White: Edinburgh] Printed for J. S. Jordan, [Printed for Silvester Doig],, 1791 & 1792. Scarce early Paine, in contemporary tract volume Sixth London edition of Paine's Rights of Man (the year of first publication), bound with the first and only edition of White's Rational Freedom, a scarce and impassioned condemnation of Paine, in a volume of five political works. Paine's great defence of the inalienable rights of the people, and their right to revolution when governments do not uphold these rights, went through many printings in quick succession and met a wide readership, despite the Pitt government's attempts at censorship. Written in response to Edmund Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France, Paine defends the French Revolution and proposes reforms to Britain's own system. The publication, at a time when there were real fears that popular revolution would occur in England, caused a great stir. Description:
London: Faulder and Son,, 1805-1810. A handsome Regency binding An attractive set of Paley's complete works. The English period binding is an exquisite example of the contemporary taste for intricate decoration, featuring a combination of fine floral tools in blind and in gilt, and with prominent panelled borders on the covers which were especially popular at the turn of the century. The set comprises a mix of later editions, except for Sermons and Tracts (1808), here a first edition. Natural Theology (1802), considered Paley's "most original and entertaining book" (ibid.), contains his arguments for the existence of God, famously introducing the argument from design and the "watchmaker analogy". The Principles of Moral and Political Philosophy (first published in 1785), Paley's first work, was a success that promoted the idea of utility in moral philosophy, influenced Jeremy Bentham, and remained an essential text for students of philosophy well into the 19th century. Horae Paulinae (1790) and… Read More

Description:
Cambridge: Macmillan and Co.,, 1861. First edition, first impression, of the most popular of all poetry anthologies, widely reprinted into modern times, and which did much to establish an accepted canon of the "best" poems in English literature. Three impressions, deceptively similar, were published - this first impression is distinguished by the relevant points established by Foxon, with a Roman type half-title and the price of "4/6" on the spine (changed to Gothic type and the price removed for second and later impressions). The first impression was published in July 1861; based on Palgrave's notes in his own copies, the second impression was published in October, and the third in November. Dedicated to his friend Alfred Tennyson, with whom he had broached the idea of a different kind of anthology during a walking tour of Cornwall in 1860, Palgrave's Golden Treasury gathered what he considered the greatest and best-known English poetry from the 16th century down to the Romantics. "It remains one of… Read More

Description:
London: Printed by John Darby for the Author, and all the Plates by John Vantack,, 1721. The cornerstone of English Palladianism Second edition of the first complete English version of Palladio's Quattro Libri (1570). Giacomo Leoni's lavishly illustrated edition originally appeared in five instalments between 1715 and 1720, with the text in English, French and Italian. It was an instant success and a second edition was quickly called for, with the text in English only. "[Palladio's] book exerted a powerful influence on contemporary architecture and classical ideals until the end of the eighteenth century. In England this was due to his enthusiastic follower Inigo Jones (1573-1632)... [who] copiously annotated his copy of the Architettura and these notes were incorporated into the first English translation made by Giacomo Leoni and published in 1715-16. Lord Burlington, Kent, Campbell, Chambers, Adam and others followed. 'Palladianism' became a party label in the world of connoisseurship and England… Read More

Paris: Maradan,, 1789-93. The celebrated French translation in the original boards First edition in French. First published in German, this is the account of Pallas's expedition across the central Russian provinces from 1768 to 1774. He reported on the passage of Venus, brought back numerous animal and plant specimens, and made anthropological observations of local peoples. Simon Peter Pallas (1741-1811) was a German zoologist and botanist and a leading figure in the Russian scientific enlightenment. He was educated at Halle, Göttingen, and at Leiden, where he submitted his doctorate in 1760. After a trip to England to study natural history and geology, Pallas settled at The Hague, where he published the acclaimed Elenchus zoophytorum and Miscellanea zoologica. He soon attracted the attention of Catherine the Great, who invited him to St Petersburg, where he became a professor of natural history at the Imperial Academy of Sciences. In 1768, at the specific request of the tsarina, he was placed in… Read More

Brussels: Bibliotheca Wittockiana,, 2016. First edition, the companion work to an exhibition originally shown at the Bibliotheca Wittockiana in Brussels, 1 of 750 copies for sale. "The exhibition Books that made Europe is a journey through 140 books spanning a period of approx. six hundred years, from 1468 to 1950. It investigates into why 500 million citizens, in 28 countries, speaking 24 official languages, and holding a significant share of global wealth, nowadays live in peace in the European Union. The exhibition anticipates by a few months the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, signed by Belgium, France, Italy, Luxemburg, the Netherlands and West Germany. A free trade agreement - including a common market and customs union - establishing, on March 25, 1957, the European Economic Community (EEC); one of the earliest steps, albeit the most important, towards the ideal of a federation of States." Description:
Guiyang: Guizhou renmin chubanshe,, 1956. First edition, second printing, of this genuinely rare and visually striking story of revolutionary selflessness, heroic sacrifice, and the people's love for the Communist Party. In keeping with the increasing scarcity of Chinese comics from the 1950s, WorldCat records no copies of the first or second printings. This story is set in the town of Zunyi at the time of Mao's famous Long March to escape Chiang Kai-shek's Kuomintang forces. While passing through the town, the Red Army diligently works to improve the lives of the people, and a soldier is killed defending the townsfolk against Chiang's soldiers. Following the Red Army's departure, grateful locals honour the dead unknown soldier with a gravestone, incurring the displeasure of local landlords and a Kuomintang official. Defiant locals resist multiple attempts to have the grave exhumed and removed, and even when local officials eventually prevail, they continue to commemorate the soldier in private… Read More

Singapore: André Publications,, 1970. The 1970 edition, scarce institutionally and in commerce, of Papineau's colourful guide to Hong Kong, pleasingly with the maps in excellent condition and still retaining the original promotional bookmark for C. K. Tang, "Singapore's treasure house of old world loveliness". WorldCat records just two copies in the United States and one in Australia. By the 1960s, Hong Kong had taken its place among the world's premier holiday destinations. Like Papineau's long-running guide to Singapore, the present example combines a lively style with recommendations to fit a range of tastes and budgets. Adverts for the Mandarin Hotel ("if you order breakfast at 3 a.m., we don't ask why"), the jewellers Lane Crawford, and multiple fur dealers speak to the increasingly lucrative nature of the Asia tourist market as middle-class westerners sought the escapist high of international travel. London: George Virtue,, 1840. First edition of prolific Pardoe's account of Hungary, "replete with interest, amusement, and information" (Theakstone). The English poet and novelist Julia Sophia H. Pardoe (1804-1862) went abroad for the first time in the early 1830s, with the first of her popular travel books written in 1833 (Traits and Traditions in Portugal). In 1835, Pardoe accompanied her father to Constantinople, after which she published two successful books, City of the Sultan (1837) and The Beauties of the Bosphorus (1838). In 1839, she was on the move again, visiting Hungary, initially staying at Presburg and then Kosztolan, Previtz, Kremnitz, Schmenitz, and Pesth. The City of the Magyar or Hungary was lauded for "its comprehensive research into Hungarian economic and political life; less florid in style than its predecessors, it also induced Elizabeth Barrett to praise Pardoe's 'word-painting'" (ODNB). Milan: Società editrice libraria,, 1906. First edition of Pareto's masterpiece, one of the most important contributions to economics in the 20th century, published as volume 13 of the series Piccola Biblioteca Scientifica. It is in the Manuale di economia politica that Pareto's changed position in regard to economic theory and politics is most completely stated. The Manuale "is better conceived and, more important, much better thought through than the Cours d'économie politique (1896-7). It is basically a work of synthesis in which Pareto presented a general theory of economic equilibrium which is considerably more refined than Walras's" (International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences). Small octavo. Original red cloth, spine and front board lettered in gilt, patterned endpapers, red edges. Boards lightly rubbed and a little discoloured in places, gilt lettering to front board retouched; a very good clean copy. Mattioli 2724; Sraffa 4514.
