Penobscot, Maine: Granite Press, 1985. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Number 8 of 125 copies, octavo size, 94 pp., signed by author. Grace Paley (1922-2007), an author of both prose and poetry, has been called "a seminal American writer". She described herself as a "combative pacifist and a cooperative anarchist" and had always been active in anti-war and feminist causes; her poetry, more than her prose, often reflects her political feelings. This the first, limited and signed collection in an edition of 125 copies of her poems first published between 1973 and 1985.___DESCRIPTION: Bound in colourful hand-painted paste paper over boards, white label with black lettering on the shelfback, the volume contains approximately 60 of her poems; printed at the Granite Press in Maine, octavo size (8.5" by 6"), pagination: [1]-90, list of books by Grace Paley [91], blank [92], author bio… Read more

Description:
[New York]: The Limited Editions Club, 1991. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Kuper, Yuri. No. 65 of 250, elephant folio size, 89 pp., signed by Yuri Kuper. Boris Pasternak (1890-1960) is perhaps best known in the English-speaking world for his novel, "Doctor Zhivago" - it was smuggled out of the USSR and published in Milan in 1957, earning Pasternak the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958. This work, "My Sister - Life", is his first published collection of poems and is considered one of the most influential collections ever published in the Russian language. Controversial when it was first published five years after the October Revolution of 1917, the revolutionary spirit pervades the poems - not in the political sense but in the spirit of beginning again. The artist, Yuri Kuper (b. 1940), has worked in several mediums, and his work for "My Sister - Life" recalls the Russian Constructivists' radical, dynamic, geometric abstractions in his use of strong diagonals and primarily geometric forms.… Read more

Description:
New York: Dodd, Mead and Company, 1911. First Edition. Hardcover. Good +. First printing, octavo size, 390 pp. Annie Smith Peck (1850-1935) was a woman far ahead of her time; at a time when women were just beginning to be admitted to the halls of higher education, she not only earned a degree in classical languages in 1878 from the University of Michigan, but became the first woman to attend the American School of Classical Studies (in Athens, Greece) and, returning to the Univ. of Michigan, received a Master's Degree in 1881. Following her education she became one of the first American women college professors, teaching Latin at Purdue and Smith.Climbing, however, became her passion at the relatively (for climbers) late age of 35. Upon seeing the Matterhorn during a train trip through the Swiss Alps she vowed to return and climb it - which she would do ten years later, becoming the third woman to summit the Matterhorn and the first to do so...wearing pants (at the time, women could be arrested… Read more
