Fine condition. "The White Lady of the Brandberg is the most famous of all African rock paintings. It was discovered in a place of natural grandeur, in a mountain gorge flanked by precipitous cliffs and filled with gigantic granite boulders. On one of these boulders long forgotten artists had painted their pictures and thus transformed a secluded grotto into a fascinating sanctuary. The discovery of this famous rock art site was made on 4th January 1917 by topographer Reinhardt Maack, who had been surveying the upper reaches of the Brandberg. On his way down through the Tsisab Gorge, quite exhausted and without water, he stumbled into a secret grotto and beheld an amazing procession painted on the wall." .

Near fine condition; dustwrapper edges very slightly curled and spine panel a little sunned. "Ewart Grogan, a gentleman adventurer dubbed 'the boldest and baddest of a bold, bad gang' of pioneering settlers in Kenya, was gifted far beyond the ordinary. Possessed of disarmingly good looks, magnetic charm, a formidable intellect and a near boundless ego, he was famed throughout the British Empire as one of the most brilliant - and controversial - figures of African colonial history. ... The dazzling and maverick Grogan was a founding father of colonial Kenya, and one of only a handful of participants in the Scramble for Africa who also witnessed decolonization. Asked in later life to impart the secret of his longevity Grogan mischievously replied: 'to smoke very heavily, drink and eat very little and… Read More

(Johannesburg: Jonathan Ball, 2014) 9781868420742. 270 x 227 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. 304, incl. index; liberally illustrated in monochrome and full colour, with maps, contemporary artwork and photographs. Fine condition. "First published in 1979 Thomas Pakenham's The Boer War is still considered the standard text on the subject and this sensitively abridged illustrated edition brings it to a wider public. His narrative is based on first-hand and largely unpublished sources. He combed the original British documents in the Public Record Office and the material in South African archives. He traced the private papers of most of the protagonists. And he dug up several hundred sets of letters and diaries written by the men who fought in the war. Finally, he tape-recorded the memories of over fifty survivors from both sides. Out of this historical gold mine, Thomas Pakenham has constructed a narrative as vivid and fast-moving as a novel." .

Merest trace of spotting to top edge. Very good condition. "The Scramble for Africa astonished everyone. In 1880 most of the continent was still ruled by Africans, and barely explored. By 1902, five European Powers (and one extraordinary individual) had grabbed almost the whole continent, giving themselves 30 new colonies and protectorates and 10 million square miles of new territory, and 110 million bewildered subjects. ... In a tour de force of historical narrative, Thomas Pakenham has written the first full-scale history of this extraordinary episode. It took him 10 years and involved trips to 22 African countries including research in Britain, France, Belgium and Germany. This is historical narrative on the grand scale, cross-cut… Read More
