Good/fair. 244 pages with a foldout map at the hinge and 34 early b&w photos; Tightly bound but foxed, esp fore-edge & prelims, also with partially whited-out penned name as well as a pasted in name-stamp on fep, cover edges rubbed, dw complete but spoiled and brittle either due to or following an amateurish tape strengthening of all edges, both sides and a slight tear to foldout map. While still substantially good condition for age, the initial impression is slightly worse Renowned photographer-mountaineer, practising first in the Canterbury region before pioneering the glaciers of Westland (Rangitata Valley etc) in the 1930's, with lots of deep exploration knowledge & history to draw on

1975 1st Edition h/b + dw Larger Format, col illus (Tight & clean, inscription-free but gift card glued to half-title, covers corners sl bumped & rubbed, ) 1970's NZ in close-up - a slightly controversial though worthy social record whose dw blurb asks "Life in New Zealand ... is it really any different from anywhere else?", answered by a pictorially poetic display of close-ups from across the land, including Joe McKinley receiving his weekly grocery order at Martins Bay (see pic - and just who is that in the background, Mike?), platform soles, bell-bottoms, too much hair, more fags in faces than is proper in our pc times, and more contentment in eyes than is seemly (what were they all on?) -- sums it all up more than any other book seen
