Description:
Port Townsend, WA and others: N.p., [ca. 1900]. Original quarto album of full morocco measuring 9 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches. There are 24 think leaves mounted on stubs with each leaf bearing four windows for photographs measuring 3 7/8 x 2 7/8 inches. Most of the leaves in the rear bear no photographs but in the front there are 64 inserted silver gelatin photographs. Of these 36 bear images of people, places and activities in the Puget Sound/Port Townsend area, The remainder are quotidian shots of England. a chief concern in this album is mining and likely they brought in some British miners (which would explain the shots of England). No surnames are given so it is all a bit of a mystery but the pictures speak for themselves. Finding a mining album of the Northwest is a rather rare occasion. The photographs of interest are; Log Cabin; Ranch House (with two women and an infant in front; the nanny appears to be a Native American); Ore Coming out of a Tunne; Harry Smith Cabin (with two gents relaxing on… Read More

Description:
N.p.: N.p., [ca. 1930]. Original vintage photograph of a striking bust of Ignacy Jan Paderewski. 7 x 10 inches. Signed long the right side of the bust. Matted, framed and glazed. Very good. While we have not been able to track down the name of the sculptor, the statue itself is very striking and strongly reminiscent of Soviet statues of this period. "Ignacy Jan Paderewski (1860–1941), a virtuoso pianist, composer, politician (the first Prime Minister of independent Poland after World War I), humanitarian and orator, was universally acclaimed as a "Modern Immortal" by his contemporaries. His charismatic personality and popular appeal made him one of the most cherished figures of the 20th century. Although his bold political vision for a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural United States of Poland was never realized, his musical legacy continues to inspire generations of musicians all around the world" (Paderewski Fest). Paderweski was especially loved in the United States where he performed at both… Read More

New York: Edward H. Fletcher, 1849. First edition in book form (originally published by the "medical class"). Octavo. xi, [1], 230 pp. Publisher's black cloth with blind-stamped floral borders on the covers, gilt spine lettering, pale yellow endpapers. Old paper shelf label at base of spine, bookplate of institution, very small flaking to spine extremities. Overall, a very attractive copy. Some of the earliest scholarly deniers of the then-new science of geology which was stretching time much further out than allowed by the bible. This is not an anti-Darwin piece as Darwin had not yet let loose his explosive theories. But in geology the mainstream of Christian though was already challenged. "Dr. Martyn Paine (1794-1877) was a Harvard educated medical doctor who equally strongly opposed modern geology. Paine was supportive of the views of the two Lord brothers. His first thoughts of a scriptural-geological nature can be found embedded in A Discourse on the Soul and Instinct, Physiologically… Read More

N.P.: N.p., [ca. 1920]. Small album measuring 5 1/2 x 3 1/4 inches and with 11 original Brownie photographs mounted into corners. The photographs are the standard 3 1/2 x 2 3/8 inches. Album with card boards, string tied. In the original small envelop on which is written the places visited by the photographer, Walter Sorenson. Album and photographs in beautiful condition. The Panamint Valley is just west of Death Valley and it is almost as desolate as that famous valley. While mined around the turn of the century it was never really the site of any great gold discoveries. Rather there were sporadic mines that sprung up for small periods of time. The main town in the Panamint Valley was not a mining town but rather a sort of supply depot for prospectors heading out on mule or car. The site that would become Ballarat was frequented by travelers and prospectors as early as 1849 as Post Office Spring, a quarter mile south, was a rare and essential watering hole in an otherwise harsh and dry desert… Read More

New York: The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, 1968. First edition of this offprint. As nearly as we can tell it was published in New York, Boston, San Francisco and Chicago at the same time. Octavo. Pages [3]-14 (originally published in The Movement of August 1968). Diminutive number 10 in ink at top right of front wrapper and small pale red splotch (blood?). Publisher's stapled self wrappers. A very tidy copy. This is a printing of an interview given by Huey Long at the beginning of his revolution. Huey Newton and Bobby Seales were the founders of the Black Panther Party, with Newton being its chief spokesman and theoretician. The Black Panther Party was the last and perhaps most significant, domestically-based left revolutionary political organization to challenge American imperialism. At its height, the BPP encompassed 68 chapters in the United States. In this interview, Huey discusses the involvement of white people with the Party and concluded "As far as out party is concerned the… Read More

Many of he cards show the famous Redwood Highway, Russ Memorial Grove, Patrick's Point, Redwood Creek State Park, Franklin K. Lane Memorial Grove and many others.
