P." and date stamped in gilt on front board; 225 x 150 mm; hand-illuminated Edwardian manuscript and photograph album titled, "Book of Memories." Belonging to John Paget, this book is a testament to the domestic pleasures of country life, with photographs of country houses (inside and out), garden and landscape views, children, horses, dogs, and fox hunting scenes. Carefully executed illuminated manuscript pages have been added, along with an occasional watercolor or pastel crayon drawing. Places include Oxon Hoath, Shopwyke House, Mount Pleasant, Leigh Park, Sulby Hall, and others. A little scuffed along joints and edges, otherwise fine. A lavish volume.

Pagès Planches.” (some plates curled at the fore-edge otherwise in tact).These are the complete 61 plates from the second edition of Pagès six volume encyclopedic work on natural history titled the Cours d’Etudes. Encyclopedic projects during the French Enlightenment, like that Diderot, were major historical events which precipitated prolonged controversy among intellects and clarified the positions of various amorphous factions in the intellectual and emotional world of the eighteenth century. Illustrated with the Plates and Explanatory notes of James Paxton.19th century full leather bindings, gilt spines in six compartments, labels in red and green. A nice set. A central work from the orthodox position of the challenges faced by evolutionary revisionism. While the 'argument from design' was hardly orginal, Paley gave it new life: "...the directness and clarity of his approach makes it perhaps the most effective statement of the external evidence of Christianity ever written."

Rotterdam: Johannes Jakobus Meyneken, 1793. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to (265 x 207 mm). 10 engraved plates with hand-coloring; engraved headpieces. (Minor losses to lower margin of a few leaves, some minor mostly marginal dampstaining.) Contemporary calf-backed boards gilt, uncut and unopened (some wear). A rare later edition. The first edition of Boddaert's annotated translation of parts of Pallas' Spicilega Zoologica was published in 6 parts in 1767-1770; a second edition was published by Esveldt & Holtrop in 1779. The present edition is a reissue of the 1767-70 edition, adding a new title-page and 6 section titles. According to Wood, the present edition is "one of the many editions of the author's Dierkundig Mengelwerk" (see Wood p.511). Plates depict several species of antelopes, bats, an opossum, and the tufted puffin. Landwehr, Color Plates, 154; see Nissen ZBI 3072.

Arnhem: Johan Friderich Hagen, 1671. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 12mo. Engraved title, engraved map, 51 engraved plates, a few woodcut text illustrations; (small marginal tear mended. Contemporary vellum, manuscript title on spine; fore-edges mended.First edition in latin, translated and edited by Paolo Aringhi, under whose name it is sometimes catalogued. Bosio (1576-1629), recognized as the "father of Christian archaeology," spent nearly forty years of scrupulous exploration in the catacombs of Rome. Three years after his death, the present work, in Italian, was first published under the patronage of the Knights of Malta. It is profusely illustrated with depictions of Roman tombs, coffins, and catacombs, as well as their mural and mosaic decorations, many of which have since deteriorated or been destroyed. The plates are identical with those of the 1632 edition. A very nice copy.

A lovely set, all volumes just very lightly scuffed along joints and edges of boards, otherwise fine, with clean, crisp textblocks. Volume III has two tiny wormholes on front joint. This particular edition is difficult to find in the marketplace.

Title with small loss affecting imprint repaired. Contemporary sprinkled calf gilt (rebacked preserving original spine and endpapers, some minor wear). Provenance: Jean Jacob de Gruytere (signature); Henri-Marcel Van Mock (signature, 17 February 1755); Dr. Leboucq (bookplate). Fourth collected edition in Dutch, a reprint of the 1604 edition, printed by the same printer as the 1615 edition with his device on the title-page. According to Doe, the Dutch editions were far superior to the "very inferior" Latin edition. The Dutch editions used the same woodblocks as the French editions. Paré, one of the most notable surgeons of the European Renaissance, is considered one of the fathers of modern surgery and forensic pathology, and was a pioneer in surgical techniques and battlefield medicine.
