Alex.r Hogg at the King' Arms, No. 16 Paternoster Row., 1784 Etching. Hand-coloured. Illustration to Walpoole's 'New British Traveller: or a Complete Modern Universal Display of Great Britain and Ireland'. 1784. 28.5 x 19.5 cm (image/impression). Mounted. This view of London by Alexander Hogg in 1784 is taken from a site near Islington, then just a village in the country, and takes in most of London with the Tower to the left and Westminster to the right; fields in foreground, St Paul's central in view, hills beyond. When this map was published, in 1783 Britain had just formally recognised the independent United States of America. Russia founded a colony in Alaska & the population of London had grown to around 820,000. British Museum number 1874,0110.296.. 1st Edition. No Binding. Very Good.
