Description:
Two pages of woodcut cursive calligraphy. Metal movable (?) type. 78; 99 folding leaves. Five juan in two vols. Large 8vo (327 x 195 mm.), orig. brown semi-stiff wrappers (wrappers somewhat soiled), new stitching. [Korea]: Torim kangdang 道林講堂, 1874. First edition and quite rare. Shadows rise among the distant trees; Fragrant foliage, the evening sky; The white heron recognizes my leisurely disposition; And drops the poem by my side. Thus reads "Returning to Stone Gate" (sŏngmun kwiro 石門歸路), the opening poem in this collection of verse and prose by O I-ik 吳以翼 (1618-66). It was posthumously published in 1874 by the author's descendants, a common practice in late Chosŏn Korea. O had an official career, but retired after having been exiled for a period. In rural retirement, beautifully captured in his poem, O called himself "the hermit of Stone Gate" (sŏngmun kŏsa 石門居士), hence the name of his posthumous oeuvre. O's ancestral home was Naju in present-day… Read More

Description:
Seven engraved plates (several folding). viii, 177 pp. Large 4to, early 19th-cent. half-calf & marbled boards (some scuffing), flat spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. London: Printed by W. Bulmer for G. Nicol et al., 1795. First edition of the Board of Agriculture's famous report on the potato. During the final four decades of the 18th century Britain experienced a number of corn harvest failures with a resulting rise in the price of wheat. The Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, the Board of Agriculture, and various private individuals advocated the adoption of the potato as a substitute for wheat, and great efforts were made to popularize the cultivation of this crop. "This work, illustrated with seven plates, is outstanding for its series of well-informed articles on the subject concerned. Potatoes are here considered for their use in feeding cattle, and also as a food for human consumption."-Henrey, II, pp. 613-14 & no.… Read More

Description:
(many on pre-printed paper), generally 8vo, separated into eleven bundles of varying thicknesses. Several hundred sheets. [Taiwan]: ca. 1933-45. A set of pre- and wartime official documents from Tainan in southern Taiwan; this collection promises to shed light on Tainan during the period of Japanese rule. Until the end of the Second World War, Taiwan was under Japanese colonial rule, and these documents originate with the Japanese colonial authorities. The period covered by the documents is roughly 1943 to 1945 (but there are some from the 1930s). Tainan prefecture was a large administrative division that included not only the city of Tainan but also Chiayi and Yunlin. Judging largely by the wording on the pre-printed forms and stationery used, the collection contains documents from a number of agencies and semi-official civil organizations. They include (translations are tentative) the Association for Mutual Assistance for Civilians Evacuated Off the Island 島外疎開民共助會; the Tainan… Read More

Description:
Two vols. Small folio (363 x 242 mm.), modern yellow-green silk brocade over boards, endpapers in each volume with speckled gold. [Japan: n.d.]. Each of the 24 beautifully rendered double-page paintings in these two albums bears the signature "Kenzan," although this appears not to be his autograph signature. In the first volume, his seal of "Ogata Kenzan" is stamped, and in the second volume the seal used is that of his artist name, "Shinsei." Ogata (1663-1743), was a painter and one of the greatest ceramicists of the Tokugawa era, famous for the skill of his brushstrokes. He was the younger brother of Korin Ogata (1658-1716), with whom he collaborated on many projects. "Kenzan was fundamentally a Rimpa in his painting and pottery as his elder brother Korin; indeed, Bernard Leach, in his engagingly biased documentary, Kenzan and his Tradition, argues a case of Kenzan being the more original of the two."-Jack Hillier, The Art of the Japanese Book, pp. 667-68. Description:
101; 100; 100 folding leaves. Three vols. Oblong 8vo (155 x 217 mm.), orig. wrappers, new stitching. [Japan]: Preface dated 1818. The rice brokers of Japan during the Edo period became fabulously wealthy, not so much from dealing in rice but from money lending. In Edo in 1724, 109 rice brokers formed a powerful guild known as fudasashi (note/bill exchange), located in the Asakusa section of what is today Tokyo, close to the warehouses where the brokers stored rice produced by the farmers of various daimyos. The fudasashi stored rice for a fee, lent money at high interest rates to the increasingly poor daimyo (most daimyo were ignorant of financial matters and, while prices continued to rise, feudal revenues were fixed), arranged the daimyos' tax payments to the shogunate, and managed the sale, on a commission basis, and transportation of rice around the country. Their lending activities, along with those of their colleagues in Osaka, developed into what we know today as banks. "The fudasashi as a… Read More

About 250 black & white woodcuts (about 170 are double-page, a few in red ink). Six vols. Large 8vo, orig. wrappers (quite rubbed, occasional unimportant worming), orig. block printed title label on each upper cover, new stitching. Kyoto: 1806. First edition of this finely illustrated work of the landmarks, famous sights, art works, and the chief cultural buildings of China in the late 18th century. The illustrators are the well-known Japanese artists Okada Gyokuzan (d. 1808), Yugaku Oka (1762-1833), and Toya Ohara (1771-1840). Okada was the first to create such detailed woodcuts in Japan. In the meisho travel guide tradition, which had become so popular in Japan at this time, the author discusses and the artists depict in finely detailed woodcuts, many of which are double-page, the historical landmarks, topographical views, palaces, and archaeological and sacred sites of China during the Qing Empire. Maps of China and Korea are included as well as many city views including those of Beijing, the… Read More

Many woodcut illus. in text. 33; 19; 20; 29; 26; 14; 12 folding leaves. Seven vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers (rather rubbed, some marginal worming in Vol. V & minor worming in Vol. VII), orig. block printed title label on each upper cover, new stitching. Osaka: Okada Saburoemon kanko, 1699. First edition of this very rare book on acupuncture and moxibustion, the taking of the pulse, and traditional Chinese medicine. This was one of the three most important works of clinical medicine of the Edo period. The text clearly describes taking the pulse of patients, both of adults and children. The nine tools used at that time for acupuncture are described and illustrated (several of them are still in use today). The present work is an elaboration of the influential work on moxa and acupuncture "Shinkyui bassui, by an unknown author or editor, published complete in five volumes in 1685. This treatise refers to an earlier Chinese work, unnamed, but probably meaning the Rei-su (or Ling-shu), traditionally ascribed… Read More

Okamoto (active 1685-1733), was a Japanese author who wrote a series of popular explanations of contemporary medical works and earlier medical classics from China. He came from a family of physicians and had studied Chinese medical books. This appears to be Okamoto's second published work. This work is a commentary and explanation of the Su Wen and Ling-shu, which "formed the theoretical basis of classical Chinese medicine.
