London, 1800. Tightly clipped not affecting image and retaining central caption.. Engraving, 16.5 x 22 cm. (image size), a good strong impression, mounted. An unusual version of the famous scene at Kealakekua Bay, in a very good impression. Although the original image on which this is loosely based is clearly that of Webber, the engraving bears close comparison with the version of the scene first published by the engraver Alexander Hogg in 1784, and included in the important compendium edited by George William Anderson, A New, Authentic, and Complete Collection of Voyages Round the World (see Forbes 61). Given that the "Anderson" was much re-issued and copied, it is possible that this print originally derives from one of the later editions. .

Good reports of affairs in America; conflict with the Spanish continues in Florida although accounts of the capitulation of Pensacola are refuted (given some 1800 troops are garrisoned there). Landholdings of British nobles are detailed, followed by affairs in New York with General Washington. Other news includes Vesuvius in the Bay of Naples once again belching and rumbling, and German sharpers fleecing London socialites with loaded dice; and so forth. Slight wear along folds, in good order.. 112 x 174 mm, printed form completed in manuscript in brown ink; printed decorative device above printers' caption; completed" Webb £2.12.0" on verso, together with small sum workings in pencil. An ephemeral reminder of the growing prosperity of the colony and a rising middle class. This formal receipt is also of colonial printing interest: the printed forms were prepared by the two printers Alfred Stephens and Frederick Stokes who went into business together in 1829, starting the Sydney Herald (later Sydney Morning Herald) in 1831. The form is completed in manuscript to receipt two pounds, twelve shillings from one Mr Webb as a deposit for Lot 4 in the "Burwood Estate, Thos. Rowleys division". Coimbra: Real Officina Typografica da Universidade, 1786. Small quarto, woodcut initial and tailpieces; contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt. A fine copy of the first edition of this comprehensive manual on the cultivation of olive trees. Dalla Bella had earlier published a work on the manufacture of olive oil - Memorias sobre o modo de aperfeiçoar a manufactura do azeite em Portugal (Coimbra, 1784) - and, finding existing agricultural manuals to be unsatisfactory, resolved to write a supplementary work on olive growing. The Memoria discusses the various kinds of olive trees, their propagation, where and how to plant and transplant olive trees, how to prune the trees and perform grafts, watering and fertilizing the trees, and the diseases to which they are subject; on pp. 161-79 is a monthly calendar summarizing what an olive grower needs to do and when. Large folio, 4 pp. (title and text) and nine images on eight coloured lithograph plates; original printed wrapper with red cloth backstrip, preserved in a solander case. One of the finest Pacific illustrated books of the nineteenth century. This is a beautiful copy of the rare coloured issue, complete in the original illustrated wrappers. The superb handcoloured lithographs are by the naval commander Richard Aldworth Oliver. Oliver (1811-1889) commanded the HMS Fly on survey voyages of New Zealand and Pacific waters between 1847 and 1851, including acting as escort to Selwyn's schooner Undine to New Caledonia and the New Hebrides in 1849. It was during these voyages that he observed the Māori people first-hand and recorded the New Zealand and New Caledonian landscape for this publication. Nine quarto volumes, comprising seven text volumes and two volumes containing 397 engraved illustrations; in contemporary quarter roan with red labels. The first major comparative study to illustrate Australian insects. Published over a span of almost two decades, this is an important work of entomology. A product of the high enlightenment, the Insectes was originally included within the famous Encyclopédie méthodique and the breadth of the manifest learning is phenomenal, a testament to the spirit of the enlightenment. Although the entomological works of John Lewin and Edward Donovan (both published 1805) have rightly been accorded iconic status in Australian natural history, this work by Olivier has not been given much attention despite the fact that the first four volumes date from the last decade of the eighteenth century. London: T. Osborne et al., 1766. Regular preliminary foxing of some volumes.. Eleven volumes, octavo; a most handsome set in contemporary speckled calf. This grave and ambitious work sets out to list the most famous and infamous individuals encountered in the histories and legends of all nations. Volume one commences starts with Aaron, the brother of Moses from the Old Testament; so begins a bewildering array of Oxford dons, saints, explorers and inventors, chosen and sketched with a view towards improving the reader by educative example. .

London: Thomas Osborne, 1745. A little foxing of the preliminaries, fore-edge margin of the frontispiece repaired; an excellent set overall.. Two volumes, folio, with 37 maps and 16 plates (many folding), and a letterpress folding table; a handsome set in the original panelled calf, decorated in gilt, rebacked by Aquarius. A fine set, with excellent early provenance, of one of the most handsome voyage compendiums of the eighteenth century. These two volumes are known as the 'Harleian' or 'Oxford' voyages', being compiled in some part from the unpublished manuscripts in the collection of the Earl of Oxford. Although separately published by Thomas Osborne at a later date, they are generally considered the logical supplement to the travel anthology first published in 1704 by John and Awnsham Churchill.
