Description:
First edition 1st printing, Very Good book with very slight bump bottom front corner, slight bumps along bottom edge of back board, sun fade at spine ends, touch of rubbing back board, a tiny snag exposing dot of board along top of front board; in a Near Fine jacket with slight edge and corner wear, orange letting on spine faded to light yellow and the T on front panel is partially faded, the jacket folds were misaligned about a quarter inch toward the front board leaving the lettering on spine off-center. Inscribed to Philip Gerber, an English Professor and writer, on the first white end page, signed by Oates and dated 10/25/69. Note card with Gerber’s comments regarding book is laid-in. Winner of 1970 National Book Award.

Description:
Near Fine in plain wraps, punched and held in variable thickness metal clasp binding – some age yellowing a couple of pencil marks in text. This is a 180 page, single sided, CONFIDENTIAL/CLASSIFIED report that was apparently only distributed internally to 20 persons in Phillips and its author, who had developed the Phillips Research Lab after WWI (first in the country for an oil company). However, there were probably 50 copies produced, since this was number 50 and went to the author. The report is fairly technical and cites numerous references, and presents a number of charts, tables and graphs. By the time of this report, Oberfell was Phillips Vice President for Research. The report concerns the transition to synthetic rubber after WWII. During the war the U.S. government constructed (at a cost of almost a billion 1942 dollars), and funded the operation of, 51 synthetic rubber plants across the country. Book has offsetting to paste downs and end papers, two light spots on front board, light edge wear and with previous owners first name - Lloyd - printed in ink at top corner of front end paper. Jacket has edge wear with chipping and slight losses along edges, mildly sunned spine, a clip and a crease to front flap, and also old internal tape reinforcements. Looks better than it sounds. This title was made into a movie with Suzanne Pleshette and Ben Gazzara, and is often advertised as - signed - because of the author�s facsimile signature on the title page.
