First edition (there were two issues, the other lists "The Author" as publisher). 12mo in sixes. 226 pp. After traveling through Europe in the 1790s, Oehler arrived in Charleston in 1802, learned how to build hot-air balloons in Georgia in 1803, and made ascensions in Nashville, Natchez, and New Orleans in 1805 before moving on to Cuba and Mexico; returning to New Orleans in 1807, he continued on to Natchez again, Pensacola, Mobile, and Augusta, Georgia, eventually making his home in Asbury, New Jersey, by 1810. Single sheet, 25 x 19 cm. Vignette of a small five pointed star at upper center of page. Old fold lines, some age toning, else very good. A partly printed document, completed in manuscript: "No. [124], Republic of Texas, County of [Jasper]. This is to certify that [Green Hutchings] has appeared before the Board of Land Commissioners for the County of [Jasper] and proved according to law that [he] arrived in this Republic [in the year AD 1834] and that [he] is a [married man] and entitled to [One League & One Labor] of Land...." The land was granted on condition of Hutchings paying $3.50 for each labor of irrigable land, $2.50 for each labor of temporal or arable land, and $1.20 for each labor of pasture land. Signed in ink, July 5, 1839, by John Bevil and W.H. Stark, and witnessed by A.G. Parker. Hutchings settled in Texas before the Texas Declaration of Independence was declared in March 1836. First page is a manuscript petition, Republic of Texas, County of Fayette, March A.D. 1841, pledging the subscribers to finance the building of a school and meeting house to benefit the neighborhood, and nominating James Stephens, Wm. H. Hodge, and Isaac Killough, as trutees "to have the said house built and to regulate the preaching and to act as trustees for such school or schools as may be necessary for the convenience of the neighbourhood from time to time...."
