JOAN DIDION'S REVIEW COPY, with a typed letter SIGNED by Oates's editor Lee Ann Chearneyi presenting the book to DIdion and requesting her comments for a possible blurb or longer review. Some staple rust on the review slip matches that on p. 40, where the slip must have spent most of the last 35 years undisturbed. Didion's personal library sold at auction in 2022, where most lots of otherwise ordinary hardbacks and paperbacks, mostly without any annotations, achieved extraordinary sums. A rare chance to obtain at more modest expense another memento from her library, and which brings together two of the most successful American women writers of the past half century.

The title page states "Fifth thousand," though this is apparently present in all copies of the first edition. A southern perspective on the Civil War, told through the eyes of an Alabama officer. Nevins (I, 139) states that the account is "opinionated, but generally reliable." Howes O2 (aa).

A scarce pamphlet about the Irish Troubles, produced at the height of the conflict, and espousing a distinctly Republican viewpoint.

The jacket has some stray pencil markings, and is imperfectly folded, but appears to be complete.

Scrapbook in poor condition, with backstrip perished, rear board detached, but internally rather sound and clean. Overall in good or better condition. Scrapbook of one Horace W. O'Connor, 1910 graduate of Harvard College. The scrapbook contains many administrative documents, such as receipts to the bursar's office, report cards, and some correspondence with various Deans and administrators. Beyond these documents are many theatre programs from Boston (and some Harvard productions). along with ticket stubs for Harvard football games, debates, and the like. A rather richly-packed scrapbook of a turn-of-the-century Harvard man.
