He was born in 1829 in Mullingar, Westmeath, Ireland, descended from an historic family of Kerry. He completed his studies in England, and spent some time in practice in London before leaving for Sydney where he arrived in 1860. He moved to Yass in rural New South Wales and set to work assisting the local community, and became an important part of the Catholic Church. He died in 1895. (No 18 in the 'Library of Australian History Facsimile' series.).
