First edition. Victor Gollancz. London. 1946. Octavo. 234pp. Original green cloth, with gilt lettering to spine a little dulled, in the original (protected) dustwrapper, slightly edge chipped, sunned, soiled and spotted. Slight foxing to rear endpapers.
Liam O'Flaherty (1896-1984) Irish Renaissance novelist and writer. Founding member of the Communist Party of Ireland. A native Irish speaker, O'Flaherty wrote primarily in English. A number of his books were banned by the "Committee on Evil Literature". All of Flaherty's novels were first published outside Ireland. "Land" is set in County Mayo, in the time of Parnell, Cogadh na Talún and the struggle of the Irish tenantry and the English landlords.

Title page woodcut vignette, 3 further woodcut illustrations. Recent quarter calf, spine in six with raised bands, leather label, gilt lettering and motifs, marbled boards. Renewed endpapers. Light foxing to plates. Large map folds carefully reinforced with paper tape. Neat marginal pencil note to xxv. A crisp handsome copy with all maps and plates as listed.
Laurence Oliphant (1829-1888) Author, Adventurer, Spy, Diplomatic Negotiator, Lawyer, Religious Mystic.
As correspondent for The Times at Trebizond Oliphant met the Turkish commander Omar Pasha, joined his force and was present at the battle of the Ingour. A first hand valuable account of Ottoman military operations from both a political and military point of view.
