The author was the brother of noted photographer Isaiah West Taber. Charles Taber went west from Massachusetts with the Gold Rush and arrived in San Francisco in 1850 He tried his hand at mining, captained a ferry boat between Sacremento and San Francisco, and eventually became an artist and author. In addition to other titles relating to climate and geology, he wrote "Rhymes from a Sailor's Journal."
