Roma: Presso Allessandro Monaldi, 1845. 8vo, pp. [iv], xviii, [2], 227 [228 author's assertion], numerous musical examples in text, contemporary half vellum, marbled boards, red morocco label; boards a little rubbed, spine slightly soiled, but a good copy, with the armorial bookplate of Robert George Swayne, Chancellor of Salisbury Cathedral, with Swayne's autograph and date (1847) on the recto of the front free end-paper. This appears to be a re-issue of the first edition of 1844, with a cancel title-page.

Oxford. Printed at the Clarendon Press, By W. Dawson, T. Bensley, and J. Cooke, 1798. Large 8vo, 217 x 130 mms, unpaginated, collating a - Gg8, contemporary straight-grain red morocco, all edges gilt; binding a little worn at extremities, spine rubbed and with some lg oss of colour, inscribed "[R Burnet] Smith/ from/ Edward T. N. Smith/ 1908" on recto of front free end-paper. The price on the title-page of "4s. 6d." has been partially effaced. Below the date appears the note "This Book may be had with or without the Ordination Service." ESTC T190770 describes a copy with this configuration, where the final leaf is Gg8. Copies in Bodleian; Saint Mark's Library, University of Delaware.

Large, thick follio, 335 x 218 mms., pp. [xliv], 1071 [1072 colophon], marginal annotation on recto of aa2, contemporary tawed pigskin, with a fleur-de-lys in centre panel, with binding date of 1549 just visible in central panel, the date is also just visible in a tiny trapezoid 42 mms. from the top front cover near the spine, a border in blind of what appears to be images of juveniles, and another outer border with images of saints, vellum working clasps, with brass endings, almost certainly a Wittenberg binding; binding soiled but would probably repay cleaning, ex-library, with library stamps (Leabharlann Lair, na mBraithre Criostai, which I think was/is a monastery in Maynooth, Ireland) on recto of front free end-paper and on last leaf, with small rectangular bookseller's ticket of J. 1798. The silhouettes are framed in a silver (highly tarnished) bead pattern, with inscriptions on the verso of each: "Countess of Hopetoun/ Given to Jane Collett/ By Mrs. Hudson/ 1798" and "Earl of Hopetoun/ Given to Jane Collett/ by Mrs. Hudson/ 1798." The portrait of the Earl seems to have been damaged below the silhouette at some stage in the past 200+ years, and the silhouettes themselves seem a bit amateur. Likely candidates are James Hope-Johnstone, third earl of Hopetoun and de jure fifth earl of Annandale and Hartfell (1741–1816) and his wife, Lady Elizabeth Carnegie (1750–1793); or, more probably, John Hope, fourth earl of Hopetoun (1765–1823), and his first wife, his cousin, Elizabeth (d. 1801)` , fifth and youngest daughter of the Hon. Charles Hope-Vere of Craigiehall, and sister of John Hope (1739–1785).

Large 8v0, 240 x 170 mms., 8 leaves, including printed covers, with engravings to front cover, and 8 coloured engraved illustrations; soiled, worn, and almost falling to bits but not quite. The date comes from a contemporary owner's inscription on the top margin of the front cover, "March 14th 1847" and the name "John [?Marshall]". A number of microform copies can be found on WorldCat, and a few printed copies. The only printed copy located in the UK is at Cambridge (Copac).

"Much has been written on Goldsmith's Life, partly in terms of its historical accuracy, but more particularly in an attempt to determine its dominant tone. For some Goldsmith's criticism prevails. And yet, notwithstanding the biography's reservations regarding Nash's character, it seems reasonable to see the Life as generally appreciative of an ambiguous subject who, as Goldsmith realized, was flawed because of his humanity in a town given to temptation, and was rendered complex by the matter-of-fact approach taken by his biographer: as he explained in the preface, 'I chose to describe the man as he was' (Goldsmith, 3.289). There is no edition statement on the title-page to the present copy, so it is probably the first issue (ESTC T146029: L, BMu, O; CtY-BR, CLU, IU, NjP, NIC).

The composition and printing history of the text of The Vicar of Wakefield is expertly told by Arthur Friedman in his Collected Works of Oliver Goldsmith (1966). Small 8vo, 158 x 98 mms., pp. [iv], 224, including half-title, with continuous pagination throughout the two volumes, woodcut vignette on general title-page, woodcut vignettes on separate title-pages for each volume, 4 full-page woodcuts in text, contemporary half calf, gilt spine, morocco label, marbled boards (rubbed); 6 leaves slightly sprung with fore-margins slightly frayed, edges worn. Bewick's woodcuts for this edition of The Vicar of Wakefield were first published in 1798, and the same woodcuts appeared in later editions. Uncommon. The only copy of this Glocester 1809 imprint that I have been able to find is in the Houghton Library, Harvard. The BL has Wellington and London, 1809, imprints, but apparently not this Glocester imprint. There was also an edition published in Baltimore in 1809

Samuel Johnson, who contributed some lines to The Traveller didn't hesitate to give a very enthusiastic endorsement in the Critical Review for 1764: "as a production to which, since the death of Pope, it will not be easy to find any thing equal." The renowned alchemist Oswald Croll or Crollius (1563-1609) was "a professor of medicine at the University of Marburg in Hesse, Germany. A strong proponent of alchemy and using chemistry in medicine, he was heavily involved in writing books and influencing thinkers of his day towards viewing chemistry and alchemy as two separate fields. … Croll received his doctorate in medicine in 1582 at Marburg, then continued studies at Heidelberg, Strasburg, and Geneva. After working as a tutor, he arrived in Prague in 1597. He remained there for two years, and again from 1602 until his death. There, through Rudolf II, he came into contact with other alchemical writers such as Edward Kelley" (Wikipedia). Malling's book, a compendium for children of "les traits memorables de patriotisme & de vertu, qu'offre l'histoire de ces royames" (to quote the Preface) in Danish history, was first published in Danish in 1783. In the preface, the publisher notes that the translator died in 1786. OCLC locates copies in Yale, Boston Athaneum, Göttingen, Linkoping, National Library of Sweden.
