Description:
New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1934 First edition, advance reading copy (ARC). Publisher's pictorial wrappers designed by Alfred Maurer, with the iconic deco design of a car driving through a hilled landscape in green, yellow, and black, lettered in yellow and black, and top of front flap priced at $2.50. Very good or better, with some light toning and wrinkling to spine, a few light nicks to edges, and a touch of thumbsoiling to p. 34. Overall, an attractive and sturdy copy. Housed in a custom black clamshell box. Appointment in Samarra tells the tragic story of protagonist Julian English as he delves into a downward spiral of self-destruction. Like the fast-paced plot, which takes place over the course of only three days, O'Hara wrote this novel in an expeditious four months when he was only twenty-eight years old. Although criticized for the candor with which he presented socially taboo sexual encounters, Appointment in Samarra is notable for propelling O'Hara to literary… Read More

Description:
New York: Boni & Liveright, 1927 First edition, first printing. Original publisher's blue cloth, lettered in gilt; light blue dust jacket, lettered in black. Near fine with light fading and a touch of wear to the spine; dust jacket unclipped with some wear and shallow chips to the spine ends, spine lightly toned. Nobel laureate in Literature Eugene O’Neill’s play Marco Millions references the story of Marco Polo as a backdrop for a satirical comedy. Despite being set in the 1200s in faraway lands, O’Neill uses the play to criticize what he saw as the rampant materialism of his day. The character of Marco is inspired by both the author’s alcoholic father and the famous financier Otto Kahn. Kahn was a person O’Neill often used as a model in his work. The character Marco notably complains, "I hate idleness, where there's nothing to occupy your mind but thinking,” cuttingly implying that the elite class used finance as a diversion from their desolate internal… Read More

Description:
1937 Original 9" x 7" Type 1 black and white photo. Photo of the 1937 New York Giants team after winning the pennant, featuring future Hall of Famers Carl Hubbell and Mel Ott. Near fine photo, with just some light toning and rippling, and brown lettering to upper margin. Overall, a great vintage team photo. The 1937 New York Giants won the National League pennant, though they went on to lose in the World Series against their crosstown rivals, the New York Yankees, in five games. Carl Hubbell was a Hall of Fame pitcher who spent his entire career with the Giants. He won NL MVP honors twice (1933, 1936) and was selected for nine All-Star games. His most memorable moment in the league came when he struck out five all-time great hitters - Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons, and Joe Cronin - in a row in the 1934 All-Star Game. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1947. Mel Ott was a Hall of Fame right fielder who spent his entire playing career with the New York Giants… Read More
