Lisboa Occidental, Officina da Musica, 1733.. First and Only Edition. 8°, contemporary mottled calf (worn, but sound), spine gilt with raised bands in five compartments. Small typographical vignette on title page. Woodcut headpieces and initials. Internally very fine. Overall in very good condition. (18 ll.), (1 l. errata), (1 blank l.), 113 pp., (1 blank l.). *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION of the earliest Portuguese translations of Lucian's De historia conscribenda. On facing pages are 2 different translations, both directly from the Greek: one very literal (by Jacintho de S. Miguel), the other an attempt to catch the author's spirit without such precise translation (by Fr. Manoel de Santo Antonio). The dedication (preliminary leaves 5r-9v), by Fr. Jacintho, is an interesting exposition of this perpetual dilemma of translators. Both Fr. Jacintho (1692-1763) and Fr. Manoel (ca. 1690-post 1759) were members of the Order of S. Jeronimo and served as Generals of the Order in Portugal. Oddly enough,… Read More

Internally clean and crisp. In very good condition. xxiv, 131 pp. *** FIRST EDITION of this translation of Lucian's De historia conscribenda, directly from the Greek; a second appeared in Lisbon, 1804. Miguel and Manoel de Santo Antonio. Oliveira (d. ca. 1812) taught Greek in Lisbon and was literary director of the Impressão Regia until at least 1809.
