Faber & Faber, 1958 232 printed pages. Signed and with dedication in ink on front free endpaper. Leading edge of text block very slightly and marginally foxed. 14 x 20.5 cm. Original grey cloth with spine lettered in red. Tiny amount of marginal dust staining on corners and very top of spine. Complete with original unclipped and unrestored yellow jacket, with short tears at the top and bottom of the spine with minimal losses- likewise at the corners. Some slight general wear and handling marks. Overall a very presentable copy with an early author's signature. Description:
Circa 1901. Diamond 128mo. 688 printed pages. Frontispiece. India paper. All edges gilt over red. Rounded corners. White vertically embossed original endpapers (slightly browned). 48 x 56mm. Original ruby morocco; spine with double fillet gilt rules and gilt block lettering (slightly worn at head and tail). Unusual composite ivorine plaques on boards (back plaque with two short cracks and a minuscule chip); upper cover with image after Rubens' Angels in relief. Mentions Edward vii and Alexandra on page 71. The ivorine composite material was sometimes used, most often but not exclusively on prayer books, in imitation of ivory as a more economic and more industrialised process. Also known as Parkesine and Xylonite, the heyday of its use was from around 1870 until about 1910. Charles Courtier & Sons was an uncommon imprint of a London bookseller. Welsh, 1867. OCLC, 424522515. WorldCat locates five copies (just one in the UK).

Description:
1943 This is an internal security booklet produced by the Ministry of Food in 1943 and signed (in facsimile?)by the Secretary to the Minister for Food H.L. French. It gives a list of rules and regulations by which to prevent dissemination of information from the ministry to enemy agents. It is marked CONFIDENTIAL on the cover. 'FOR RETENTION' is also written on the cover, in an unknown hand. From the library of Sir G.S. Bishop, youngest ever Deputy Secretary who was at the Ministry of Food 1945-9. This ephemeral document is very scarce. The association with a very senior member of the civil service during the war, someone who took many decisions to achieve the best food security possible for the British people during WW2, is highly appropriate and adds to the academic and collector's interest.. Soft cover. Good.

Methuen & Co, London, 1898 xv, [1], 667, [1], printed pages; 24 plates. Marbled endpapers. Signature of Matlbys handtooled in gilt at the foot of the front paste-down endpaper. All edges marbled (slightly faded). Preliminary pages maginally browned. 15 x 22 cm. Rebound by Matlbys of Oxford in sumptuos brown half morocco. Spine in six compartments with gilt lettering & date, and raised bands with double blind rules. Matching brown buckram over the boards. This first edition had a profound influence on Lawrence of Arabia. In what became his trademark style, the young T.E.Lawrence was not afraid to take on an opposing viewpoint, even if it meant going against Sir Charles Oman, the Oxford academic expert on Crusader castles at the time, whose own stance was that East had influenced West, not vice-versa. Lawrence, not without basis, was confident he could out-research Oman and convince his examiners that the Crusaders took their own architecture to the Holy Land. This interest in the Middle East…
